I’ve already told you all that I’m trying out making all of my Valentine’s Day items this year. I already shown you how to make a super cute Valentine’s Day wreath for your door or to brighten up your walls, but what about your tables or shelves? I wanted to create something that I could sit in my living room or kitchen to look fabulous and embrace the V-Day spirit! And when I looked around I noticed that one of my favorite decorations is my topiary. So, I decided to create a Valentine’s Day topiary to decorate my home in a loving style! It was super simple to make and changes the whole look of the room. Here is how you can make one too!
DIY Valentine’s Day Topiary
What You Will Need
1 Clay Flower Pot (choose the size you want)
1 Round Styrofoam Ball (size that goes well with your pot)
Round Wooden Post
Red, Pink and White Paint
2 Bags of Valentine’s Day M&Ms
Styrofoam Base (for inside your pot)
Moss or Moss Ribbon
Hot Glue Gun
How to Make It
Begin by painting your clay pot and Styrofoam ball. I went with red for my ball so that the white wouldn’t show through between the M&Ms too much and pink for my pot to give it a sweet look. Make sure you have covered all areas well with paint and then set them aside to dry.
When your clay pot is dry (after two coats) use your red ribbon to tie a bow around it. I attached the ribbon to the back of the pot with hot glue to stabilize it so that I could get it even all the way around. Then tie it in a bow on the front.
Once your pot is ready, set it aside so you can start working on your ball. Start by using your hot glue gun to secure a single M&M in the middle of your ball. Then, using alternating colors, glue circles of M&Ms around your center M&M.
Continue on with your pattern to cover the entire front half of the ball (the back will not be seen and it actually gets a little too heavy if you cover the entire ball).
Once you have glued all your M&Ms, set the ball aside. Paint your round wooden post white and set it aside as well. You are now ready to start assembling your topiary.
Start by cutting your Styrofoam base so that it will fit in your clay pot.
Then use your moss or moss ribbon to wrap around the Styrofoam base and to fill in all the spaces.
Next, make a hole in the bottom of your Styrofoam ball using a screwdriver or drill bit.
Cut your white wooden post to the length you want it (just see what looks right to you) and then insert it into the hole in the bottom of your Styrofoam ball. Then, push the other end of the post through your moss and securely into your base.
Finally, take a piece of red ribbon and tie it around the top of your white post.
Your topiary is now assembled and ready to be displayed!
Now find the perfect place to set your topiary so that it can be seen by all! This is a fabulous decoration for the living room, the kitchen or even the office! It adds a fun splash of color and give a Valentine’s Day feel to the entire room.
