I love decorating for holidays. And while there are an abundance of decorations out there for Valentine’s Day, I often find myself wanting something a little more unique. A little more special. A little more me. And since I celebrate pretty much every holiday with a welcoming wreath, I decided that I wanted to have a special Valentine’s Day wreath this year that was just the right mixture of sweet and sassy. So, off to the craft store I went to look for some inspiration. Now, let me say I had never made a wreath before. So, I was a little worried about how it would all come together. But, as I quickly found, with the right materials and a little creativity, the perfect project is easy to put together. Here’s how I made my fabulous Valentine’s Day wreath. I hope it inspires you to make one too!
DIY Valentine’s Day Wreath
What You Will Need
Styrofoam Wreath (you can use an actual wreath one of use a flower arrangement ring for a flatter surface)
Yarn (Pink and Red)
Paint and Paintbrushes
Glue or Glue Gun
How to Make It
I started out by laying out all my supplies. I had opted for a flat wreath instead of a rounded once since I wanted to be able to attach hearts to it. Then I got my yarn ready. I wanted to give my wreath a little more dimension so I decided to use two alternating colors. Holding the two colors together, I tied them around my wreath to form an anchor point.
Now, making sure that the colors stayed in an alternating pattern, I wrapped the yarn around my Styrofoam base to create a pattern.
I continued to wrap my yarn in the same pattern all the way around the wreath. As I went around corners, I had to wrap it tighter around the inner wreath to make the yarn line up correctly. **TIP: Don’t be afraid to pull your yarn and space it out as needed to make the wreath look correct. And you’ll be able to cover any imperfections so don’t stress if there are areas that don’t look exactly perfect.** When I was finished, my wreath looked like this.
Now I was ready to add on my decorations! This is where I was able to get creative. I took wooden hearts (light weight) in all different sizes and painted them red and white.
Once my hearts were painted, I embellished them. There are tons of ideas you can use here. Line one with pearls. Add foam hearts to a few. Paint on polka dots on one. Make them unique and fun.
Once my decorated hearts had dried, I glued them to my wreath using a hot glue gun.
Then I glued some of my extra pearl beads at different places on the wreath to give it a sweet look.
Finally, I turned my wreath over and added a hanger to it. **TIP: You can use either ribbon or extra yarn to do this. Simply pull out a piece of our yarn from the back of your wreath and ties the ribbon or yarn around it at an even interval to center it when it is hanging.**
And that’s it! Super simple right? Now all I had to do was find a special place to hang my wreath! You can use it on a front door (keep it dry though) or in one of the rooms in your house. It will give a sweet Valentine’s Day feel that makes you smile every time you look at it.
I hope you’ll have fun creating you own wreath that helps you to feel the Valentine’s Day love!
