MillerBug is obsessed with all things monkey right now. He walks around the house making monkey noises, gravitates to anything that has a monkey on it and tries to make anything he finds into some kind of monkey item. I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised since I’ve called him my little monkey since the moment he was born. From as early as I can remember he loved to climb and one of his first sounds that actually made sense was “Oh oh ah ah” when he tried to impersonate monkeys. So, I’ve been trying to come up with more monkey themed crafts for him. And this past week I’ve been saving our old toilet paper rolls thinking that I could turn them into something. So, when it rained this weekend, I decided a little craft time was in order. And we made our toilet paper rolls into some super cute monkeys that have provided hours of fun. Here’s how you can do it too!
What You Will Need
Old Toilet Paper Rolls
Dark Brown Paint
Dark and Light Brown Crafting Foam
Brown Magic Marker
Brown Pipe Cleaners
How to Make It
Start off by painting your toilet paper rolls brown. This is a great step to keep the kids busy and by using a sponge brush they can really get good coverage without it taking forever.
While your paint is drying, you can create your monkey head! Simply cut out one dark brown oval. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Then cut an oval with two bubble for eyes attached from your light brown foam. You can draw these onto the foam for your children to cut or cut them yourself. Glue the light brown foam onto the dark brown foam. Then glue on your googly eyes and add a nose a mouth using your brown magic marker. Finally, cut out half circles for the ears and attach them to the top of the head. You can accent the ears with little brown marks using you marker if you wish. Now your face is done!
Next, cut out large ovals for the belly and small ovals for the feet. Use your brown magic markers to draw on toes. Then glue your belly to the middle of your toilet paper roll, your feet to the bottom and your head to the top.
Finally, as a finishing touch, take a half of a brown pipe cleaner and wind it into a circle to make the tail. Attach the tail to the back of your toilet paper roll so that it sticks out to the side and can be seen. Now your monkey is complete!
Let all of your glue dry completely and then your child can play with their new friend! This simple craft provided hours of fun in our home and has quickly become MillerBug’s newest friend!
Happy Crafting! Oh oh ah ah!
