Having a child is a big responsibility. They count on you for support, guidance, and love from the moment that they are born up until the day you die. It is important that you as a parent become engaged in their activities. Of course, when the child is of a young age, their support needs will be much more demanding. It is vital that you take an active role in their health and well-being as well as their up-bringing.
Become a Role Model– It’s been said many times that your actions speak louder than your words and this is especially true for children. Remember that kids learn what they see and hear. You are their role model, so set a good example from the get go. Speak to them with respect, be patient in your lessons and teach them to respect themselves and others. By seeing you lead through example, they are much more likely to turn to you and allow you to be involved in their lives when they need help with difficult situations.
Become Involved with Their Education– Take an active role in their education. This, of course, does not mean to only get them off to school safely each day. Make sure that you take time to ask them about what they learned in school that day and also take time to participate in school activities whenever possible. Something as simple as sitting down with your child to do homework can help them feel secure in the fact that you are interested in their lives. After all, it only takes minutes to cement your place in their daily activities.
Become Involved in Their Leisure Activities– If your child likes to play sports, make sure you take some time out from your busy schedule to take them to a sporting event. Play the sport with your child in your local park. Become a cheerleader and show your child that you support them in their endeavors. As parents, it can be easy to pick and choose which things you want to be a part of and hand off the things you don’t to your spouse but if you want your child to truly feel that what they do matters to you, sometimes it requires participating in all activities, especially the ones that they know you might not choose to take part in if it wasn’t important to them.
Learn About Technology– Take the time to learn about the latest technology in the gaming world. By learning the characters and how to play a particular game on a gaming system will open the doors for conversations about the game. You can discuss which role they played in the game, if they were challenged, and the end result. While I know the though of this can make many parent groan, being engaged with your kids often revolves much more around their interests than your own.
By following the above tips as well as looking for daily ways that you can become more involved in your children’s lives, you can become a more engaged parent. And by doing that, you can ensure that when there are questions, problems or simply needs, your child feels comfortable and secure involving you in all the areas of their lives.
