By putting together a combo of items that make my gym time not only effective but also enjoyable, I’ve discovered that nothing (not even light bladder leakage) can keep my from having an awesome workout each and every day! And to help you do the same (because you know you NEED to mama!) I wanted to share with you the five items that every mom needs in her gym bag! Let’s get started shall we?
1 – An Awesome Playlist – I don’t know if it’s just me but the older I get the harder it is for me to push through a workout. Just about the only thing that keeps me going some days is an awesome, inspirational playlist on my iPhone. I’ll take my phone and headphones, hop on the treadmill and let Katy Perry’s “Fighter” push me through a few miles. I’ve found that having songs that are both upbeat and inspiration help me fight through the times when I just want to stop and in all honesty, I’ll often find myself singing along and pumping my fists (much to the horror of those working out near me). It’s essential that I have not just good but great music to turn my boring old workout into something more!
Plenty of Hydration – Keeping myself hydrated while on the treadmill is essential to my success. While water is obviously the best choice when working out, I do add a little flavor to it by infusing fruit directly into the water. Whether it’s strawberries, blueberries, lemon, lime or any other type of fruit, the subtle flavor not only refreshes me but also helps me to push through my workout in an effective way. By taking small sips both before my workout begins and during my walking intervals, I’m able to ensure that I have enough fluid in my body to keep from feeling sluggish an dehydrated.
A Great Pair of Tennis Shoes – Whatever your favorite brand of running shoes, make sure that you have shoes that support your feet and meet your needs. I personally have several different brands of running shoes in my closet because they offer support in different ways. If my knees are sore I may reach for my Reebok shoes where as if my feet are feeling the running pain, my Nike’s are my first choice. There are many shoe stores that will look at your arch, your bone structure and your needs and suggest a shoe that will provide you with the support and comfort you desperately need! Another great tip is to always have an extra pair of shoes in your bag in case the ones you are wearing start causing blisters or aren’t completely comfortable.
A Protein Shake – Did you know that by adding a boost of protein to your diet after your workout you can help your body continue to burn fat and also avoid that shaky feeling that you often get after pushing yourself in the gym. While every person’s needs are different, I always add a small cooler with some almond milk and a scoop of whey protein to my gym bad. Then, once my workout is done, I can cool down with a delicious protein shake and know that I won’t feel woozy when I leave the gym! This is also great if you start feeling shaky during your workout! Simply hop off the treadmill, drink some of your shake and then start back up slowly for a renewed burst of energy!
