My kids are all about super heroes. Like most boys, they love to escape into a fantasy world where flying is possible, battles are out of this world and the good guys always win. However, with their age difference I sometimes find it difficult to get them on the same page when it comes to favorite heroes. It’s rare indeed when I find a movie that connects with both of them – ignites their imaginations – and provides them with favorite characters that they just can’t get enough of. Recently, we found just that with Disney’s Big Hero 6 at the movie theaters. Since it’s release, Baymax, Hiro, Wasabi and all their friends have felt like a part of our family. We’ve talked about them. We’ve discussed their story. We’ve cheered for their Oscar win. And like long lost friends, tomorrow they will be coming home with the release of Big Hero 6 on DVD!
As any homecoming is, their return to our lives is a reason to celebrate. Both of the boys have been counting down until the date when we could purchase the DVD from Walmart and I’ll admit, their excitement has been contagious! Since you all know that I’m kind of over the top when it comes to my kids, it shouldn’t surprise you that I wanted to find some way to make release day even more special! I racked my brain. I mulled over ideas. And then I asked both my kids to tell me which character from Big Hero 6 they love the most and was not surprised at all by the answer of Baymax. Knowing that I could bring Baymax to life in a fun way, I headed to Walmart to pick up some supplies to help recreate Baymax in our home to celebrate the February 24th DVD release!
Armed with ingredients that separately didn’t look like much, I set out on MY mission to turn them into our favorite Big Hero 6 character. Now, for those of you who haven’t seen the movie, I don’t want to give away too much but let me say you’re going to fall in love with Baymax! He starts the movie as a totally lovable healthcare robot who develops a personality all his own and morphs into a superhero who helps to save Hiro. During the movie, you see two different sides of Baymax – the lovable robot who deeply cares for Hiro and the superhero who makes it his mission to protect Hiro, even it it is at the cost of his own existence. Knowing that both sides of Baymax are equally important to my kids, it was essential that I create treats that embraced both aspects of his character while bringing smiles to their faces.
Knowing that marshmallow pops were the perfect way to capture Baymax’s charm, I set to work turning my Big Hero 6 vision in to a reality. I knew that making the regular Baymax pops would be simple and only require a few steps but I wanted to thrill my kids with super hero Baymax as well. So I set out all my supplies, put my creative cap on and got to work.
To start with I had to prepare my marshmallow pops. To do this I melted a few white candy melts. Then I rolled my lollipop stick tips in the chocolate and inserted them into the bottom of my oversized marshmallows.
Then I simply set them aside and let the chocolate harden to ensure that I had a solid foundation for my creation!
Once my marshmallow pops were prepared, I set to work turning them into something completely different. I started by adding one bag of red candy melts and one teaspoon of Crisco to a bowl and melting it in the microwave for one minute. After stirring my ingredients together to get a smooth liquid consistency, I rolled half of my marshmallow pops in the red mixture.
When half the marshmallows were completely covered in the red chocolate, I set the aside to let them dry. **Tip: I recommend using floral arrangement foam to stick the ends of your pops into so that it allows any excess chocolate to drain off and leaves you with a smooth finish.**
Once they were completely dry (and I do mean completely – if you move on the the next step before the chocolate hardens you’re going to end up with a big mess…trust me!) I melted half a bag of white chocolate candy melts in the microwave and stirred in a half of a tablespoon of confectioner’s sugar to thicken it up. I wanted my mixture to be a little stiff so that it didn’t slide right off the side of my marshmallow pops! Next, I added the mixture to a piping bag with a small round tip and piped on a white section for the opening in Baymax’s mask.
I quickly noticed that with the confectioner’s sugar in my mixture, my white “mask” area did not look smooth so to fix that, I let the white chocolate sit for roughly thirty seconds after piping in onto the red pops and then ran a damp finger over the top to smooth it out.
Now I was ready to put eyes on both the lovable and super hero Baymax Marshmallow Pops! I melted a few black candy melts and added them to a clean piping bag with a small round tip. Then I simply added two black dots for Baymax’s eyes onto each white mask.
Knowing that super hero Baymax was perfect, it was time to move on to my much simpler task of transforming robot Baymax. This was the easiest thing ever! All I had to do was add two large dots of black chocolate to my marshmallows for eyes. Then I used a toothpick to “drag” a line between them.
And ta-da! Baymax emerged! All that was left to do was wait for my chocolate eyes to harden and I was done! And my end result? Well it was pretty much the the perfect Baymax Marshmallow Pops to help us celebrate the release of Big Hero 6!
I knew that once the kids saw them they wouldn’t be able to wait until our release celebration to try them out. And that was A-OK with me because a little pre-release treat was definitely in order! At first I acted like I was going to make them wait but with their excitement and pleas, I naturally gave in and let them put our Baymax Marshmallow Pops to the taste test! In fact, I had made extras for just this reason and was thrilled that the kids were so excited about devouring their favorite super hero!
After seeing the looks of delight on their faces, I now know EXACTLY how the boys and I will be spending tomorrow afternoon. Since my Baymax Marshmallow Pops are ready, all I’ll have to do is head to Walmart after I drop them off for school to pick up the DVD, a few toys and maybe even some comfy tees to enjoy the movie in. And the best part is, my purchase of the Big Hero 6 Blu-Ray/DVD + Gift With Purchase Set includes a digital movie on Vudu while supplies last! I’ll simply need to do is scan my receipt using the Savings Catcher in the Walmart app. A short time later I’ll receive a message on my phone or email with instructions on how to download my digital copy and watch it from any device! Awesome right? Even better? While I’m at Walmart I can pick up even more Big Hero 6 merchandise and toys to ensure that my kiddos get in on ALL the fun! It’s going to be a release day party that they won’t soon forget…I can promise you that! Because after they get home from school, we’ll grab our treats, cuddle up with our Baymax Plushes and have a fun movie afternoon that sure to warm us up even in this freezing cold weather.
And as we sit back and rediscover some of our favorite super hero friends, we’ll once again get lost in the story of Hiro and his journey to overcome loss and become a true hero to those in need! We’ll laugh. We’ll cry. And we’ll make our movie afternoon perfect with our edible Baymax treat. Ah, yes, it will without a doubt be an ideal way to thrill my kids and spend a fun afternoon filled with giggles, smiles and super heroes!
I know you will want to get in on the fun too! So grab your superhero cape and accept your mission in the kitchen! Because I can guarantee you that with these fun Baymax Marshmallow Pops and Big Hero 6 on DVD from Walmart, you’ll be a super hero mom in your kids eyes!
