Traveling is tons of fun….but it can also be stressful. Especially when you happen to be traveling with kids. Forget the dirty looks or the outrageous amount of things you need to take with you. The simple fact that you’re responsible for another human being is enough to make any parent sweat bullets. And while I’ll never tell you that traveling with kids is a breeze (because with my kids, I’m highly doubtful that it ever will be) I have learned some tips and tricks along the way that make traveling with kids just a little easier!
Take Entertainment on the Go: From books to a tablet to drawing pads and crayons, keeping your kids entertained during travel is likely going to be the thing that saves your sanity. Diversify when it comes to the entertainment you bring along and remember that just because your kiddo likes one thing at home, they may have a totally different favorite on the road.
Plan for the Unexpected: It’s a safe bet that anything you think won’t happen, will. Even if your child is older, make sure to have an extra set of clothes. Additional shoes. And ALWAYS pack essentials in your carry on bag if you are flying. After all, you can survive if you end up with lost luggage but if your child’s favorite toy happens to be in that suit case? Well, then you’re in big trouble!
Don’t Stress When Things Go Wrong: As a parent it’s important to remember that things will go wrong. You child will cry. They may even throw a tantrum. And that’s OK! Don’t worry about what people around you think. Instead stay calm and try to provide the support your child needs. If they feel your stress level go up, theirs will as well and it will make it harder to get them calmed back down.
Make Sure you have Plenty of Room: Traveling with kids requires more “stuff” that I ever dreamed one person could need. Depending on the age of your child you may need diapers, wipes, toys and more. If they are older chances are you’ll need a whole suitcase for their electronics and entertainment items. So make sure you have a suit case that can deliver!
