My little guy loves to read. Literally every time the hubs or I sit down he comes running with a book in his hand and a story in his mind. So when Staples asked me to team up with them to share how reading and crafts go hand in hand in honor of World Read Aloud Day today, I was excited to get started! While I did receive books and art supplies free of charge to facilitate our fun, my opinions on reading with your preschooler are my own.
Having a preschooler, reading is a big deal in our home. My little guy is slowly learning to recognize letters and sound out words and while we’ve been reading to him before bed since he was born, his love of reading has now expanded to any time of the day. It’s not unusual at all for me to walk in and find his flipping through one of his favorite books and I adore watching his face as the story comes to life in his mind.
Whether he’s checking out the pages on his own or sitting down for story time with my husband or I, he truly can’t get enough of his favorite characters and stories!
So, while the weather was cold this past weekend, I decided that he and I would sit down with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and take the story off the pages and into real life. He has long loved the letters and the sequence of the book and I thought bringing the coconut tree to life would be a fabulously fun way to spend the afternoon. After pulling out all of our art supplies, I looked around the house for a little inspiration and got him on board with helping me turn our story into a fun and fabulous craft.
Knowing that we HAD to create the coconut tree, we went in search of a used paper roll for the base. At first he wasn’t sure what we were doing but as I showed him how to color the paper roll to turn it into the trunk of the coconut tree, his eyes filled with wonder and his face set in a determined little scowl.
After he had used his crayons to transform the paper roll into a tree trunk, we were ready to move on to the leaves.
I let him help me draw out leaves on our green construction paper and cut them out with our scissors. By this point he was really seeing the craft come together in his head and was jumping up and down in delight. Together we cut slits in our leaves and place them on our “tree”. And the finished project was one that he was so excited about!
He sat with his coconut tree in hand as we read the story once again and I could just see how much more real everything was in his mind after our fun time crafting! Knowing what a difference bringing his favorite books to life through art makes, I plan on working my way through all his books and letting him bring them to life with construction paper and crayons!
