Thank goodness it is almost Spring! After a winter that seemed like it was never going to end and more than enough colds in my house to keep us all in bed way more than I would have liked, I am counting down the days until I can declare that it is officially Spring! In fact, each and every day I am poking my nose out the door in anticipation of that one morning when I can fling open the windows, air out the house and start my oh so needed Spring Cleaning! Since I know that day will be here super soon (oh come on already!) I’ve been doing a little prep work around the house. Between packing up winter clothes and cleaning out much neglected corners, I’ve been looking for a better way to banish the winter germs and clean up the Spring messes. Because while I’m so ready to welcome Spring into my home, I’m even more ready to get rid of dirt and germs in a new and beautiful way!
I’m sure it really comes as no surprise to any of you moms that my kids have been bringing all types of dirt and germs into my home. They have passed colds back and forth with their dirty little hands at school and then proceeded to share them at home and I’ll be honest, it has gotten really old. Since I’m probably equally excited about an aired out home and dirt and germ free kids this Spring, I’ve added an additional step to my Spring Cleaning prep. Because while I can get those cabinets spotless and the windows sparkling with very little help, I’ve discovered that getting rid of all the grossness my boys bring into our house may take a little assistance.
Knowing that something had to change, I headed to Walmart in search of a way to rid my home of dirt and germs. I considered several different options and tried to weigh out the benefits of each. But as soon as my eyes lit on the PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes in the household cleaning aisle, I knew I had the perfect solution that was easy enough for even my boys!
Now, I’ll admit that I was a little surprised to find hand sanitizing wipes in the household cleaning aisle. After all, I had been there looking for household cleaning items. But the minute I saw them I knew that the most important surface that I needed to get clean was my boy’s hands! Knowing that this was the perfect way to stop dirt and germs coming into my home just in time for Spring, I added both the 70-count canister and the 35-count canister to my buggy. Then I headed home to find the perfect way to incorporate them into our lives and bid those pesky germs goodbye!
Once I arrived home, I looked around to figure out where I wanted to place my PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes. I knew they needed to be easy to reach. But I also knew from past experience that if things aren’t pretty, they don’t last long on my counters. You see I’m a very visual person and have a bad habit of putting things in drawers or under the counter when guests are coming and forgetting to ever pull them out again. The only solution I could come up with was to turn my PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes into a decorative piece that was both functional for getting rid of germs and beautiful as well!. After pulling out some crafting supplies, I set to work creating a No Sew Felt Cover for my wipes that would make them bloom!
What You Will Need:
Felt in a Variety of Colors
Hot Glue and a Hot Glue Gun
Small Pom Poms
Accent Pieces for Decor
PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes
How to Make Them:
Knowing that I needed my sleeve to be sturdy, I began my project by cutting a piece of card stock to go around my wipes canister.
Then I simply glued the ends together to form a tube, ensuring that it was large enough to easily slip on and off of the wipes. Next, I repeated the process with felt, leaving just a little of extra length on the top so that I could seal the felt over the edges of the card stock.
Once I had secured the edges of my felt to the card stock and folded the top corners over, securing them with glue, I was ready to start the decorations. Since Spring was my focus I wanted to add bright and colorful felt flowers to my cover and it was so easy to make them! I simply cut out six petal shaped pieces of felt for each flower.
Then I cut a slit in the bottom of each petal and folded the bottom under the top, securing it with hot glue to give the petal “shape”. Once all my petals were done, I cut out a small circle from my card stock, secured the petals with hot glue and added pom poms to the middle. I repeated the process with three different colors of felt, adjusting the sizes so that each flower was different. Finally, I cut out three “leaves” from my green felt and secured them to the back of the flowers.
From there, it was as simple as adding a little hot glue to the back of each flower and securing them to my felt cover.
Once my adorable cover was ready, I slid it over the top of my PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes and ta-da, instant transformation!
I still had the amazing germ fighting power of PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes inside this adorable package that was perfect for almost anywhere in my home! I knew I would not want to hide this fun and decorative container and that meant that every time we walked in the door, we would be greeted with a hand sanitizing wipe that is proven to reduce the transmission of germs in our home! Woo Hoo! This convenient wipe that is trusted by hospitals to get rid of 99.9% of germs was a superior way to stop germs at the door and reduce them getting further into our home!
Knowing that I had found the right product to use when we walked in the door, I thought even more about how I could stop dirt and germs in their tracks. I knew that my boys would grab a wipe from my Spring container when I reminded them but I needed to find a way to take this dirt and germ fighting power into their oh-so-boyish rooms. Without a worry in my mind, I repeated the process, using a sports themed idea to create covers that would make the PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes perfect for both of their bedrooms. Just as I had with the Spring cover, I used my card stock and felt to create a cover and then attached basketball themed ribbon to the top and bottom of it.
After adding a few felt letters to the front of the cover to remind my kids that fighting dirt and germs by using the PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes was a way to score major points in our home, I knew I had a way to clean their hands that they would totally love.
And since I knew this cover would fit perfectly in each of their rooms, I could rest easy knowing that no matter where they were in the house, dirt and germs were not with them!
After adding these decorative covers to my PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes canisters and then setting them throughout the house, I felt confident that we had an easy and adorable way to practice good hygiene (and keep our hands sparkly clean)! And since I knew that in addition to keeping our hands and faces clean they also had the added benefit of killing illness-causing germs, I could rest assured that I was doing all I could to keep our Spring free of sickness!
With my Spring germ cleaning in full effect, I was now ready to open the doors, slide up the windows and really welcome Spring into our home. Because now I knew without a doubt the only thing getting into our home in the coming months would be fresh air and sunshine!
So no matter whether the boys bring in messes or germs, I’ll be ready to tackle them both with a germ killing wipe that is gentle enough to use on their soft skin!
