I don’t think it comes as a surprise to any of you that I’m a true Southern Girl. Carolina born and bred, I take pride in my Southern roots…especially when it comes to cooking. In fact, there is nothing I love more than a hearty Southern dish full of flavor (and love). Growing up at the beach one of my favorite meals was Southern Style Shrimp and Grits. I would always love when my mama set it on the table in front of me, steaming hot and full of flavor. And I just naturally assumed that EVERYONE had tried this dish at some point. But when I recently discovered that some people had never even hear of Shrimp and Grits, I knew something had to be done. So whether it’s an old favorite or something new, get ready to cook up this Southern Classic in a way that will have your mouth watering!
What You Will Need:
6 Slices of Bacon
1 and 1/2 Pounds of Peeled Shrimp
4 Teaspoons of Lemon Juice
1/2 Cup of Sliced Green Onions
1 Cup of Sliced Leeks
1 Clove of Minced Garlic
1 Cup of Stone Ground Oats
1/2 Cup of Sharp Cheddar Cheese
1 Teaspoon of Butter
Salt and Pepper to Taste
How to Make It:
Start by adding your bacon to a large pan. Fry it well until it is crispy and them remove it from the grease.
Leaving your grease in your pan, add your Shrimp and leeks and cook them until the shrimp turn pink.
Once your shrimp turn pink, add in your lemon juice and garlic and sautee them gently. Immediately before removing from the heat, add your crumbled bacon back into the mixture.
While your shrimp are cooking prepare your grits according to the directions on the package. Once they are done mix in your butter and cheese and allow it to melt. Stir your grits well.
Now that all of your ingredients are ready, dip your grits onto a dish and top them with your shrimp, leeks and bacon mixture. Sprinkle your green onions over the top and sever immediately.
Then all that’s left to do is enjoy this flavorful Southern favorite!
