When the hubs and I got married (many years ago) one thing on our registry that I did not receive was monogrammed glassware. It was one of those things I had always wanted because when I had imagined dinner with my family as a married woman, glasses with the initial of our last name beautifully etched on them had always adorned my virtual table. In those daydreams, the glasses had glittered and the laughter had rung out. And somehow, through all these years, I have held onto the image of these special glasses that would make any beverage look and taste fabulous.
Well, last week as I was setting the table, I realized that my reality was far from my monogrammed glass dream. That’s not to say that my family is not perfect….because it totally is. But what’s not perfect is the cloudy, ugly glasses that we drink out of. Knowing that monogrammed glassware was not in the budget right now, I sat down to decide what to do. After a little thought and a little more research, I decided it was time to make my own monogrammed glassware!
As I looked around for glasses to start my project, I realized that no matter what I did to my glasses, if I didn’t find a way to keep them shining, my monogramming was never going to show! Perplexed as to how I could shine and protect my soon to be monogrammed glasses, I headed to Target in search of a better way to get them clean.
As I walked down the aisle that all of the dish detergent items called home, my eyes landed on a brand I’ve trusted for years…Finish®. And when I saw their all new Finish® Max in 1™ , I instantly knew that it was the missing link in my quest for sparkling glasses! Excited to have an easy and effective way to keep my glassware sparkling, I headed home to start monogramming my glasses.
The first thing I did when I walked in the door was to put the glasses I was going to transform into the dish washer with a Finish® Max in 1™ tablet.
Since glass etching is dependent on having a clean surface from the very start, I knew that this was the right way to ensure my project turned out exactly the way I wanted it too.
After allowing the dish washer to run a full cycle with the Finish® Max in 1™ tablet hard at work, I was ready to get started on my glassware transformation.
What You Will Need:
Clean Glasses Washed with Finish® Max in 1™
A Stencil with the First Letter of Your Last Name
Glass Etching Cream (Find it at any craft store)
A Paintbrush
Warm Water
How to Make It:
To start the transformation of my sparkling clean glasses, I had to decide exactly what I wanted etched on them. I knew I wanted the first initial of my last name but to mix things up a little I wanted it inside of a circle. I quickly drew a circle and put my F in the middle of it on my electronic cutting machine and then printed out my stencil on vinyl so I could stick it directly to my glasses.
As a side note, if you don’t have a way to make your own stencil, simply purchase letter stencils at the craft store and tape them onto your glasses, ensuring they are well secured so that none of your etching cream gets under the stencil.
Once I had my stencils printed out, I secured them to my clean and sparkling glasses.
Now I was ready to start etching! This is seriously the easiest process ever! To do it I simply dipped my paint brush into my glass etching cream and painted a thick layer on the area of my glasses that I wanted to etch.
It was really important to me to pay attention to the detail so I carefully went around the stencil, ensuring that all of the glass that showed was covered with a thick layer of the glass etching cream.
Once I had painted my glasses with the glass etching cream, I set my timer for 90 seconds and allowed the cream to go to work! After 90 seconds, I carried my glasses to the sink to wash off the glass etching cream.
I carefully rinsed my monogrammed area to rid it of all the cream and then I pulled back my stencil to reveal the pattern underneath.
I could instantly see the pattern that the glass etching cream had left behind and couldn’t wait to see my complete finished product!
Once I had completely removed my stencil, I quickly saw that my glasses were beautiful but they were not sparkly anymore! Since I had been working with them, they had fingerprints and sticky residue from the vinyl all over them – YUCK! So I quickly grabbed another Finish® Max in 1™ tablet and ran my finished product back through the dishwasher so that I could be sure my final monogrammed glassware project really shined!
When I removed them from the dishwasher for the second time, all I could see was the amazing sparkle! The monogram was perfectly placed and the glass was perfectly clear! I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to fill my glasses with fun beverages for family dinners.
So, that night when we sat down to eat, I filled my monogrammed glasses with juice and set them on the table, in full display for the whole family. My hubby couldn’t help but notice the way they caught the light and the sparkle that the Finish® Max in 1™ tablets had given them. As he looked at me in confusion, I simple smiled and told him I finally had the glasses I had always dreamed of. And all it took to get them was a little creativity and some Finish® Max in 1™!

It really wasn’t. I laid out a towel just to be safe but as long as you’re careful it’s not a mess.
I want to do some of those glasses this summer. I need to buy a new set because my old set is permanently etched from my dishwasher, I probably meed finish tablets too.
