Losing my dad was one of the most life changing experiences in my life. In one moment, what I thought the future would look like was changed forever. And in that moment, I learned a lot. A lot about love. A lot about loss. And a lot about what happens after a loved one passes away. So when Quotacy.com asked me to share my thoughts about life insurance through a sponsored post, I was more than willing to explain the exact reasons why the last three years have convinced me that no matter who you are, you can’t afford not to have life insurance.
Growing up, I never really wanted to think about a parent’s death. I think that’s pretty standard for most children. Even into my adult years, I just saw both of my parents as invincible. While in the back of my mind, I knew that at some point in my life I would have to deal with their loss, I always imagined that it would be many, many years in the future. Similarly, when they would try to discuss life insurance with me, I’d just shrug it off, figuring it was something that I could think about later. But not now. Because to me thinking of term life insurance meant that I was acknowledging that they might not be around forever and for a long time that was an unthinkable thought.
Now I knew that my dad had life insurance. After all, his whole goal in life had been to take care of his family. So it stood to reason that he would ensure he could do the same even if there came a time when he wasn’t present to do it himself. But I didn’t know much more than that. It was simply something that I knew was out there but I hoped desperately we would never have to use. So I really didn’t pay attention. I kept myself in that bubble where losing a loved one only happens to other people. Until that cool October afternoon when it happened to us.
My dad died unexpected at the age of 65. He was so young. He had so much life left to life. But in seconds he was gone and our world was changed forever.
Of course following his death, I rushed to my mom’s side. I knew she had so many hard decisions to make in the coming days. There were plans to put into place. Actions to take. Grieving to do. But what I didn’t expect were the costs that are associated with losing a loved one. From the actual costs of his cremation and service to general living costs for the coming months and years, I was so glad that my dad had been prepared for all of those years. I was so glad that while I refused to pay attention, he didn’t. And I was so glad that he cared enough about my mom to ensure that he continued to take care of her through life insurance even when he was no longer with her.
You see, my dad was prepared for the unexpected. He hoped for the best. I know without a doubt that given the choice he would still be walking on the beach with my mom and playing with my kids. But he knew that life doesn’t always end up the way you want it to. And the last life lesson he was able to teach me is that while you hope you never have to leave the ones you love behind, make sure that if you do you’ve taken care of them in every single way you can.
Now, I know that the hard things to talk about are the ones that need to be discussed. I know that the unthinkable can happen. And I know that while we all hope it never happens to us, being prepared in case it does is the best way possible to say a last ” I love you”. So I’ll learn this one last lesson from my dad. I’ll remember that when life fell apart around us, he helped us start picking up the pieces by making sure he had life insurance in place. And I’ll ensure that when the time comes for me to leave this world, I’ll give the same gift to those that I leave behind.
If you haven’t thought about life insurance, now is the time and today is the day. Trust me when I say that the unexpected doesn’t always happen to someone else.
