I’ve got a confession to make: I have two children who are very picky eaters. And while this drives me crazy on a daily basis, the unfortunate truth is that it is very difficult to balance the diet of someone who is a very picky eater. If your child won’t eat the healthy things it’s time to start thinking outside of the box to get them to eat it!
However, the good news is that there are ways to get them to eat new foods, and a few ways to sneak healthy foods into to mix. Want to know more? Of course you do!
Getting your picky eater to enjoy a more balanced diet can be as easy as implement a few daily changes! Before giving up on feeding your picky eater a balanced diet, try some of the tips below!
Always Keep Trying! They say that it takes introducing a food 15 to 20 times in order for your child to begin to like it or eat it, so don’t give up! The easiest way to balance their diet is to get them to eat the foods, but it’s going to take a lot of convincing and attempts before that happens.
Give them choices! Instead of saying “this is for dinner”, try offering two healthy options and tell them that they need to choose one. This allows them to feel like they are in control and it also will give you a better chance at getting them to eat something healthy.
Sneak things in! Do they like yogurt? Pancakes? Add fruit! (Bananas are delicious on pancakes!) Sometimes they are simply too stubborn and won’t give in to anything that you try. If you are at that point, it’s time to try adding things. If your child likes a certain food, can you MAKE it healthy? They like pancakes; use whole wheat to make them as you normally would, or make them with banana and eggs and a bit of whole wheat flour. There are many ways to add in healthy things and make foods in other ways that make them healthy. You can also do things such as giving them shakes or smoothies that they like with things in to balance their diet that they normally wouldn’t eat. They won’t even know it’s there.
Don’t prepare special meals! The WORST thing that you can do for a picky eater is to prepare separate meals for them because they don’t like what was made. This will only show them that you will give in to them so be sure to avoid it. What you should do is for every meal, be sure to make something in the meal that you know they will like. They don’t like the spaghetti that you made, but they like a certain veggie? Be sure to make that veggie as a side so that when they don’t eat their main food, at least they ae eating something that you approve of as a side. Be strict with this and show them that they need to start eating a bigger variety of foods.
Ask them what they don’t like! By talking about it, you will be able to determine what they don’t like about the foods that they refuse to eat. You might just be able to fix the issues with things that they don’t like, which will allow you to better balance their diet.
Let them cook with you! Letting them cook with you will get them in on the process to make the food. They will be more willing to eat something that they helped to make. You will want to start with easy foods that they like, and then introduce the cooking of foods that they don’t like.
Now that you’ve got tips to get your picky eater enjoying more balanced meals, try them out. Experiment with foods. And above all, never give up! After all, you are in charge and while it make take a little time and effort, getting your child to eat balanced meals is worth it!
