Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad. – Anne Geddes
Each year as Father’s Day rolls around, I’m filled with gratitude. Now it’s not really that Father’s Day should be any different than any other day of the year when it comes to celebrating the father that my husband has become. But something about that one day where you take the time to celebrate dads resonates on a deeper level with me.
For that reason, it’s super important for me to put together a gift that is extra special for my boys to give their dad. I search endlessly for items that are all about him and celebrating the things that he loves. Because while I know that a gift never says it all, it does show in special ways what a hero he is in the eyes of two very special boys.
Now I guess to really explain to you why Father’s Day is extra important in my eyes, I need to tell you a little more about the special father that we celebrate. My husband became a father at 32 years old. But he didn’t become a father in the delivery room the way so many men do. Instead he became a father when he said “I do” to me. In the one moment he went from being a single man to being the daddy of a four year old little boy. And while some men may have taken that responsibility lightly, my husband didn’t. You see, he looked at a little boy who desperately wanted somebody to call dad and not only said I’ll be that person but he went above and beyond. He played ball. Wrestled in the floor. Chased monsters away that hid under the bed. And as soon as he could, he signed a piece of paper that made official the title that he already so proudly wore.
He embraced everything that a dad should be and then went even further. And for one little boy who hadn’t ever really know a father figure, he became a hero.
Then, as often happens, time went on. And a new baby entered the family. Just as I wondered if I could be as good of a mother to a second little boy, my husband wondered how this new little person would change the feel of our family. But in that instant when our family was completed, I saw in his eyes that his love had grown. His patience had grown. And his ability to be the best dad around had doubled.
Even with the differences in age, he found a way to make time for each of our children in special ways that showed them how loved they were. As I watched over the years he became a patient teacher, encouraging coach and doting dad. He took the things his kids loved and made them even better. And one way that he found to connect with both the boys was through computers. You see, he had loved computers since the day I met him. So it was just perfect when the boys started to show the same interest. They would spend time together taking old laptops apart, building new desktops from an array of pieces and exploring how things worked. And whenever my oldest son would get frustrated at something he couldn’t figure out about putting a new computer together, my husband would patiently sit down and work through it until there was a solution that they both felt they had accomplished.
Knowing that both my boys think their dad is a hero because he can fix any computer and explain any problem, I set out this year to put together a gift basket that would allow them all to continue doing the work on computers that they love while celebrating the patience and understanding of their very awesome daddy! To start, I picked up a simple gift basket.
Then I did a little research on the essential items that they needed to explore computers and build amazing machines! After heading to Walmart to pick up what I thought were the perfect items for my gift basket, I headed home to create a hero-sized gift basket that would not only make my husband feel special but would also allow him to continue spending time with the boys doing what they all love.
I started by adding pliers. And screwdrivers. And screen cleaners and air canisters. But my gift basket was not complete until I added the one item that my techy hubby so badly needed: an Energizer Headlight. I had seen it on the shelves at Walmart and I knew that when it was time to really get to work on computers, my husband and the boys were always asking for flashlights and then taking turns pointing the flashlight into the computer so they could see.
Knowing that I could easily solve this problem and make their time together even more special by allowing them to go hands free with an Energizer headlight, I added this perfect finishing touch to my gift basket. And since I had a money saving coupon for these amazing headlights, I felt great knowing that I could add one in for the kids to, ensuring that they could really make the most of their computer time with their dad!
Once I had arranged all the essential items in the way I wanted them, I sat back and looked at my gift basket. Because while my husband has been a hero in my eyes since the day I met him, I knew that this was a gift that would allow him to keep his techie hero status in the eyes of my boys.
Now, when Father’s Day arrives in a few short weeks, it will be easy for us to show the special dad in our lives how amazing we thing he is with a gift basket that’s sure to shine a light on the things he loves to do with his boys!
