I kid you not when I say that my little guy is always on the go. Getting him to slow down for pretty much anything is hard. In fact, I have to find creative ways to remind him to slow down and enjoy his delicious snacks. So when Horizon Organic encouraged me to make snacking more fun by getting creative in the kitchen, I was thrilled to oblige. While this post was sponsored by Horizon Organic, all opinions on making snack time memorable are my own.
I never thought I’d be a “boy mom”. I had always imagined myself having tea parties and paying dress up. But life as the mom of a boy is totally different than anything I could have dreamed. Where I grew up thinking about dollhouses and dress up, my boys are pretty much crazy about bugs and critters and always making life an adventure. In fact as my youngest gets older, he’s always outdoors. He has no interest in stopping or slowing down and pretty much the only thing that grabs his attention and captures his imagination is critters. I can’t even tell you how many afternoons I’ve spent this summer alone looking for (shudder) bugs and making up stories about what they do with their little bug friends. Knowing that my son is critter crazy, I decided the only way to make snack time a true adventure was to create some bug themed snack ideas that were perfect for him.
Now before you think I’m getting all crazy and digging in my pantry for chocolate covered grasshoppers (which I can guarantee you I am definitely NOT), let me tell you a little about snack time in our home. Even as busy as our lives are, I encourage my boys to live a healthy lifestyle. I love that they enjoy going outdoors to run and play and I want a snack for them that is nutritious and delicious…not to mention fun! And over the last few months I’ve been searching for ways to make snack time critter-rific with our favorite Horizon Organic Snacks! After looking all over the internet and finding tons of butterfly ideas but very few buggy ones I decided it was time to take matters (and snack time) into my own hands and create some critters that would thrill my little guy’s imaginative nature while filling his belly with a nutritious snack!
With an idea in mind but no clue how I was going to execute it, I picked up some of our favorite Horizon Organic snacks from the store. With selections like Organic Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Cinnamon Snack Grahams and Cheddar Snack Crackers I was sure I could find a way to tie these snacks I felt great about serving in with the bugs that my little guy so totally loves.
With snacks in hand, I headed to the craft store and picked up some googly eyes, fuzzy pipe cleaners and long skinny pastic pretzel bags. Then I headed home home to create a not so creepy, crawly treat. To start with I added my Horizon Organic snacks to my bag. Then I gently twisted the bag and tried to keep a round shape, securing it with a twist tie.
After using my fingers to puff out the next section of the bag to ensure I ended with more rounded shapes, I let my little guy add blueberries and repeated the process of twisting and sealing that section with a twist tie.
I followed the same process one more time with grapes and ended up with caterpillar looking shape that I knew I could totally turn into something more.
After securing some googly eyes and antenna using my pipe cleaners, I stepped back to look at my creation. And I have to say it was pretty cute! With fruit and Horizon Organic snacks inside, it was a great balanced snack that I could feel great about serving and it looked enough like my little one’s beloved buggy friends to get him more than a little excited.
After setting aside my caterpillars, I realized that snack time couldn’t be complete without a drink and so I quickly transformed my Horizon Organic Vanilla Milk Box into a matching friend. It was as easy as using colored paper stock to wrap around my container and securing it with glue.
Then I simply added large googly eyes, pipe cleaner antenna and a pipe cleaner mouth.
And instantly I had a caterpillar and a buggy friend to make snack time truly memorable. As I headed outdoors to present my little guy with his bug-rific snack, I couldn’t help but grin knowing that while snack time was always fun, these snack ideas would totally take it over the top. And as he ate his Horizon Organic filled caterpillar and drank his buggy Horizon Organic Milk, he excitedly told me about the adventure he would have with his new snack time friends!
We sat there on the front porch and named our snack time creations and talked about the fun personalities they may have. And as he filled his belly with nutritious food, his filled his mind with stories and fun.
Later that day when he called me over to inspect yet another bug, I looked at his excited little face and I couldn’t help but smiling, knowing that not only had I given him a nutritious snack to fuel his summer fun but I had also encouraged his love of all things buggy in a way that only a boy mom can.
Now, as we move through the summer, I’ll challenge myself and him to come up with fun and creative new ways to make snack time everyday an adventure. And no matter what critters we happen to decide to make, I’ll feel great knowing that they are all made especially delicious by using Horizon Organic Snack items!
Then tell me….how do you make snack time fun?
