Getting plenty of activity into my kids’ days has always been super important to me. I love to see them run, play and use their growing bodies to have tons of fun. But I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes life gets crazy. It ends up seeming like my kids spend more time riding in the car or sitting at the table doing work than they do getting outdoors and being active. Add in video games and the draw that they present and I found this summer that some changes needed to be made in order to get my kids back to the active lifestyles that I know are so important for them.
As I sat down and looked at their busy summer and back to school schedules, I realized that I’d have to be the one to initiate some outdoor fun. Because while they are always ready to head outside and grab a ball, it’s my job to encourage them to do just that and stay active in the process. So I looked at what our days looked like. I examined the things that were taking away from keeping them active. And then I decided a few simple changes would do the trick!
The first step to making sure my kids stay active was getting them outdoors. I’ll admit that with working form home and then endless entertainment options they have indoors, this was a step that had to be deliberate on my part. I sat down and looked at my schedule. Then I planned two times a day where we would have a chunk of time outdoors. We could head to the park. We could walk around the neighborhood. We could thrown the ball in the front yard. But no matter what we decided to do, those times each day were outdoor time. And while they could go outside and play any time they want during the day, these were the times that we dedicated specifically to play and to making it fun again.
This brings me to my second tip: play with your kids. I know it can be so easy to sit on the porch and watch them but really, nothing thrills kids more than mom or dad joining in! And it’s a great way to show them that you love being active too! Throw the ball with them. Play a game of tag. No matter what you choose to do together, the fact that you’re all doing it is a great way to show your kids that it’s important for everyone to be active and play every day!
Fuel Their Fun with a Snack
I don’t know about you guys but I have two hungry boys and playing outside means we need a snack to keep us all going! One of the things that ends play time the quickest in my home is the need to go inside to get something to eat and drink. Knowing that this has derailed play time on more than one occasion and that my kids need to eat every three hours to give them energy to play, I’ve started being prepared! Now, instead of saying we’ll get something inside, I take delicious snacks with me that will fuel our play time fun!
With a variety of delicious and nutritious bars and snacks, Clif Kids provides nutritious snacks for kids’ growing bodies with no high fructose corn syrup, synthetic preservatives or artificial flavors. Add in the amazing taste and you’ve got the recipe for a snack my kids can’t get enough of that are designed to give them the energy they need to fuel their outdoor fun! The variety of flavors and snack options ensures that snack time never gets old and the energy-boosting ingredients help make sure that play never slows down.
In fact, my kids have come to expect that when play time occurs, snack time with Clif Kids Bars and snacks does as well. Knowing that they will get a great snack to keep them going, they play harder, have more fun and enjoy their time outdoors more knowing that a delicious snack awaits them at the end of it. Since adding Clif Kids ZBar, made with a nutritious blend of complex carbohydrates, three grams of fiber, and three grams of protein to maintain kids’ energy and Clif Kids ZFruit, which is an excellent source of vitamin C and doesn’t need to be washed, cored, seeded, cut or refrigerated before eating to our play routine, I’ve found I’m not having to beg the kids to play and instead they are going longer and stronger thanks to having the right snack to fuel their fun.
Have a Variety of Options and Activities
Playing longer means needing more options for outdoor fun. I make sure the fun never ends by providing a variety of outdoor activities. Whether it’s basketball, soccer, football or riding a bike, having options means that my kids can choose the play that inspires them for the day and always keep going by choosing a fresh activity when the previous one gets old.
The same goes for Clif Kid Bars and snacks! By providing a variety of snacking ideas, they make it easy to give each of my boys exactly what they want while giving them the fuel to play longer. It’s been said that variety is the spice of life and I’ve found that to be more true than ever when it comes to outdoor play and snacking ideas!
This summer I’ve put an emphasis on getting outside and rediscovering the fun of outdoor play. As the school year starts, our schedule may have to be adjusted but time everyday for play will not disappear. In fact, I’ll work it in even more if I can because I know that once they head into the classroom, it will be even more essential for them to get out, get playing and have fun at home! Thankfully I’m not alone in my mission to get my kids out and playing! To demonstrate CLIF Kid’s commitment to play, CLIF Kid created an online Hub to inspire outdoor experiences that will encourage kids (and parents) to get outside and be kids. The CLIF Kid Play Hub provides tips and tools for parents and communities to promote play for kids of all ages. This great resource helps challenge families like mine to get outside and play every day and provides fun ideas to help you and your kids get active at parks, backyards and even city sidewalks!
So no matter what your child’s favorite outdoor activity is, find was to encourage them to get active. Get playing. And have fun. Start with Clif Kids Bars and Snacks to fuel all their outdoor activities and finish with satisfied kids who are making play a part of every day!
