You guys, it’s FOOTBALL SEASON! Trust me when I say the excitement has reached epic levels in my home. Living in a house full of guys, it should come as no surprise to anyone that football season is one of our favorite times of the year. Pretty much every weekend there’s an endless selection of games, touchdowns and touchbacks from favorite teams and of course some amazing game day food. So what recipes make our game days extra spicy? I’m so glad you asked because I recently found the PERFECT game day food and trust me when I say it will add heat to even the most epic home-gating and tail-gating celebrations!
For my guys, game day means finger foods and burgers. As they run back and forth between watching the games and throwing the football outside in the backyard, they want items that they can easily pick up, gobble down and keep going so that they don’t miss a single second of the action. And, well, I like to keep things pretty simple so that I don’t have to miss out on any of the game day fun either. But to me, going simple should never mean sacrificing big taste. So when I recently found El Yucateco hot sauce at Walmart, I decided it would be the perfect way to take the flavor of our sliders up a notch and make them a true game day winner.
Armed with a few different varieties of El Yucateco hot sauce from the Mexican Food Aisle at Walmart, I decided to take plain sliders and inject them with a kick of flavor that would not soon be forgotten. I picked up the El Yucateco Green Habanero Hot Sauce that is made with fresh green habanero peppers, garlic, select spices and seasonings first. Since I know this was the most popular El Yucateco sauce, I figured it was a safe bet. But I didn’t stop there. I also grabbed the slightly milder El Yucateco Red Habanero Hot Sauce which is made with fresh red habanero peppers, tomato, select sauces and seasonings. And then for good measure I added the Black Label Reserve Hot Sauce to my cart as well. After reading all about the smoky flavor of this hot sauce, I knew a pinch would go a long way in any of my recipes.
Knowing that I now had plenty of flavor on hand, I set to work turning a family favorite into an amped up game day delight! To make my sliders I mixed two pounds of ground beef (for best results don’t use a super lean meat) and one tablespoon of minced garlic. This is my standard recipe that I’ve used for quite some time. But I didn’t leave my recipe plain for long! To add a little kick I added two teaspoons of the El Yucateco Red Habanero Hot Sauce.
Then I added in another teaspoon of the Black Label Reserve Hot Sauce. It didn’t want to overdo the heat but just wanted to make sure I had a little kick and some smoky flavor that would be noticeable in each and every bite.
With my hot sauces mixed into my burger meat, I quickly shaped patties that were one eight of a pound each and prepared them for the grill.
While the clock ticked down until the next game started, I called the hubs downstairs, asked him to fire up the grill and let him go to work as the grillmaster of our game day feast!
He cooked our burgers for about four minutes on each side until they were the perfect medium temperature and had mouthwatering grill marks running through them.
Once the burgers were cooked to perfection, it was time to assemble our game day sliders! And putting them together was so simple! I started by slicing my slider buns. Then I added lettuce to the bottom bun, topped the lettuce with our flavorful patties and sprinkled blue cheese on top.
After placing the top of my slider bun back on, I secured the sliders with what else but a football themed toothpick for a finished version that was sure to be a winner each and every game day!
With my Hot & Spicy Blue Cheese Sliders assembled, all that was left to do was call in my home team and see if I had scored a culinary touchdown!
As their eyes landed on my creation, their mouths began to water and I knew without a doubt that my game day twist was a success.
And as they took their first bites, I watched them close their eyes as they savored the punch of heat that the El Yucataco hot sauce had brought to the burgers combined with the coolness of the lettuce and blue cheese.
It was truly the game day grub they had been looking for and the added flavor was the perfect way to take a classic game day food and elevate it to a whole new level.
While the kiddos were perfectly content with the level of heat their burgers provided, the hubs decided to spice things up even more and added some additional El Yucateco hot sauce to the top of his slider. With it’s taste that boasts less vinegar than the average hot sauce while delivering flavors that are perfectly intense, his even hotter and spicier Blue Cheese Slider was exactly what he had been looking for.
As I tasted each version and tried several bites, I knew that I had found a classic game day food that we will be celebrating with all season long.
Because we know without a doubt that when it’s time for our favorite teams to get warmed up and ready to go, it’s time for us to do the same with our Hot & Spicy Blue Cheese Sliders.
