With my oldest just entering his teen years you may think that I’d be new to competitive sports. But nothing could be further from the truth. You see, I grew up on a soccer field sideline…literally. That’s just what happens when you’re the second child in a soccer loving family. In fact, some of my earliest memories are of watching my older brother as he defended the goal. I kid you not, from the time I was born until my brother finished his semi-pro career in his 20’s, a huge portion of my life was spent watching strikers, midfielders and goalies navigate the game and learning more about both playing your hardest and ensuring sports injury prevention while you did.
So I guess you could say soccer is just in my blood. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that I’ve encouraged both of my boys to embrace the sport. I’ve watched as my older son has grown, become more athletic and discovered that sports are what he loves to do with his time. But through both watching my brother and watching my own son, I’ve also discovered that side-lining injuries are often part of a sport and preparation to avoid them is essential.
Knowing what I do about soccer (and sports in general) I’d consider myself somewhat of a pro. After all, 30 plus years of visual research has to count for something right? And through those experiences, I’ve come up with and implemented a few safety tips that are so simple but also so essential to keeping your player healthy.
Always Warm Up: From beginners to seasoned pros, warming up is just a part of sports injury prevention. I’ve seen so many people run straight out onto the field and straight into an injury. And while warming up correctly doesn’t guarantee that injuries will never happen, it’s step one to staying safe while playing. Basic stretching, light jogging and activities to stretch out the muscles are the right way to prep for injury free practices and games.
Learn the Game: Just as important as warming up is actually knowing the game. In soccer, you must slide a certain way. You need to learn how to kick the ball (sounds crazy doesn’t it) to avoid foot and ankle injuries. If everyone could just walk out on the field and play with no practice, more people would probably do it. But actually learning how to play soccer correctly and well takes year of training, experience and learning. So take the time to find a coach who can show your child the basics to avoid injuries.
Know Your Limits: Trust me when I say boys often think they are superman. They don’t think they will get injured and they will often push themselves past where they physically should go. I can clearly remember my brother skinning both his arm and leg (badly) and then going back into the game and trying to push through. While at times this can be done, every athlete needs to know their limits; to listen to their bodies and ensure that while they push themselves to improve, they don’t push themselves to a place where injuries happen.
Put on Your Protective Gear: Perhaps the most important item when trying to avoid injuries is youth soccer gear. Especially in soccer, it’s essential to not only have the correct gear but to know how to use it. Cleats, shin guards and cups are always the first line of defense in my book. But I’ve recently learned that all soccer protection products are not the same. Thankfully Storelli Soccer Protection’s next generation of products are designed to allow players to cut out all the interference and focus on performing at ultimate levels!
