With Halloween right around the corner, things are getting a little spooky in my home. From candy to costumes to, most importantly, snacks, I’m working on ways to make every part of our day a spine-tingling celebration. And while some may think that you should save all your extra-special surprises for the actual day of Halloween, I have to disagree. Instead, I’m finding ways to add a little bit of boo-riffic fun to each and every day with an awesome snack that is slightly spooky and a lot sweet-making it perfect for the little ghosts and ghouls in my home.
Now, this snack idea really isn’t outside of the box for my family, because for years now we’ve been mixing things up with Snack Pack® pudding cups. With tasty options that the kids love and are also a way to add calcium to their daily snack time, they are the base for tons of our afternoon snacking fun. And with the spookiest season of all in full swing, I figured there was no better time than now to give our snack time a little makeover.
To start my Snack Pack® transformation, I grabbed my boys and asked them to put on their thinking caps and tell me thespookiest idea they could come up with. Of course the both shouted “spiders” and I cringed a little. But then I got to thinking: spiders are spooky, but we were going to change things up and make them sweet as well.
I started by pulling out my chocolate and vanilla Snack Pack® pudding cups.
Next, I needed to find a way to make some of the pudding cups spooky and some not quite as spooky (remember, I have a little guy as well). So I divided the cups in half. On the vanilla cups, I used glue and orange glitter to make the cups themselves festive.
On the chocolate cups, I attached stretchy spiderwebs to make them look like spiders had been working away, covering the outside of the Snack Pack® cups with their spooky webs.
Once my Snack Pack® pudding cups were ready on the outside, it was time to peel back the easy-to-open lid and really take them to the next level.
I knew I wanted to stick with the spider-web theme with my mix-ins, so I grabbed a bag of black candy melts, heated them up, and poured them into a piping bag.
Once my piping bag was full, I squeezed out any air and cut off the tip of the bag with scissors.
I was now ready to pipe my easy spiderwebs. I laid out a piece of wax paper and then used my melted candy to create spiderwebs by piping lines that joined in the middle (almost forming an asterix shape) and then connecting them all with two circles of chocolate.
With my black spiderwebs done, I repeated the process with white candy melts so I would have different colors for the different flavors of pudding. The great part about my spiderwebs was that they didn’t have to be perfect, so I was able to let the kids try their hand at creating their own and make it fun.
While my spiderwebs were hardening, I assembled all of my decorated Snack Pack® pudding cups and crushed up some chocolate wafer cookies in a bag. Then I let the kids sprinkle crushed chocolate wafers onto the top of their Snack Pack® pudding cups.
Next, they added a hardened chocolate web to the top.
After adding a few plastic spiders around the cups to make them extra fun, we had a snack that was perfect for just my boys or all the neighborhood kids!
Because let me tell you, nothing brings friends running like Spooky Spiderweb Pudding Cups!
As the boys ate their treat and enjoyed the creamy taste of the Snack Pack® pudding that they love along with the crunch of the cookies and the velvety chocolate of the hand-piped webs, I knew that while my snack idea might be spooky, our creation was all about fun.
And by taking the time to turn our simple snack into a Halloween treat, I’m sure I’ve created memories with them that they will not soon forget.
As Halloween approaches, I’m willing to bet we’ll try our hand at turning our pudding cups into pumpkin patches, haunted ghost houses and more. Because creating this awesome Halloween snack showed us that nothing is more fun than giving our Snack Pack® pudding cups a little personality and a lot of flavor!
