Living in a house full of boys, I’ve learned a thing or two about being outdoors. Both of my kids (and my hubby as well) would literally live outside if they could. In fact, from the minute the sun comes up on the weekend until long after it sets, the indoors are forgotten and the outdoors are their playground. That’s why finding a house surrounded by lots of land that was ripe for exploring was on the top of our wish list when we recently found ourselves looking for a new home.
And when we found two beautiful wooded acres in the mountains of North Carolina, it just seemed to be screaming our name. As soon as we moved in, we cleaned up the landscape, put in a firepit and collectively decided that whenever possible, our weekends would be spent outdoors. However, we quickly discovered that while we totally could rough it, we didn’t really want to. Instead we wanted to bring comfort and dare I say it, glamour, to the woods we had so quickly fallen in love with.
Since we knew that #Glamping (or Glamorous Camping) was totally the solution we needed, we set out to make the outdoors just a little bit fancier. With a perfect combination of rustic charm and classic comforts, I quickly found that camping out and roughing it really don’t belong in the same sentence for my family. Instead, I discovered that the perfect way to mesh the great outdoors with the comforts this mama has come to expect is by creating a glamping experience that we can’t wait to repeat each and every weekend.
To start our glamping fun, a little preparation was necessary. After all, I didn’t want this to be your standard camping experience (shudder). And to make it something totally different, I needed some supplies. Because while you may think of sleeping bags, hot dogs on a skewer and ugly grey thermoses when I say camping, I’m about to totally change that perception and have you dreaming about glamping!
I quickly headed to Walmart to stock up on some essentials. A new (bigger tent) and a queen sized air mattress were on the top of my list. But I really wanted our camping area to invite you to come on in, relax and stay a while so I added in a comfy quilt, matching throw pillows and some large vases and flowers. Yes, I may have been going to the “I’m the queen of my tent” extreme but really, isn’t that what glamping is all about? Next, I strolled down the frozen pizza aisle to pick up a meal my family would love. And while the Freschetta® Naturally Rising pizzas are a great option for any day of the week, I opted to use the Freschetta® Brick Oven® pizzas for an unforgettable outdoor meal. After stocking up on pizzas, I added Honey Maid Graham Crackers to my cart and headed home to give my family to a whole new take on a beloved outdoor experience.
Once I got home, I put the hubby to work setting up the tent while I pulled together all the finishing touches that were going to make this experience truly memorable. To start with I blew up our brand new Queen sized air mattress. After all, sleeping on the ground is so not glam. But honestly, neither is a plain mattress. So I quickly added some comfortable sheets, a gorgeous quilt and throw pillows.
Once I had our mattress in place, I realized that our tent was big enough for sleeping bags or even blow up mattresses for the boys as well, ensuring that the entire family could get in on the glamping fun. Thrilled with my sleep solution, I went back to work transforming my tent into the ultimate glamorous back yard location.
To enhance the look of my gorgeous quilt and pillows, I placed our wooden outdoor chairs at the entrance of the tent and added rustic vases with beautiful flowers to make us feel like we were relaxing in the lap of luxury.
For the finishing touches, I added a rug to the entrance of the tent as well as a lantern inside and instantly I had a cozy sleeping space that boasted all the glamorous comforts that I so longed for nestled nicely into the perfectly sized tent to hold our entire family.
Now I could have curled up right then and there and stared at the tress but my guys quickly let me know that all that work had left them ready for food. After all, when you have lots of boys around, filling their tummies is never far from your mind. I really wanted to create a meal that boasted family favorites but served them in a whole new way. So I quickly pulled out a Freschetta® Brick Oven® 5 Italian Cheese Pizza and a Freschetta® Brick Oven® Pepperoni and Italian Style Cheese Pizza and prepared to cook them the glamorous way…over our beautiful fire pit.
After quickly setting up my tripod grill from Walmart, I removed my frozen pizza from the box, placed it on aluminum foil and positioned it perfectly over our open fire.
As the flames rose and the cheese began to bubble, all our our stomachs began to grumble. Because our Freschetta® pizza boasted a crust that is made like fresh bread with only natural yeast and no chemical leaveners topped with the most premium ingredients.
You could smell the sauce made from real tomatoes and the 100% real cheese made it easy to see that Freschetta® pizzas are truly like no other!
But I didn’t want to stop with just the pizzas. In fact, I was quickly becoming a glamping expert and so while my obviously amazing pizzas cooked, I had a delicious side in mind as well. Earlier in my preparation, I had chopped brussel sprouts and mini sweet peppers and added them to a bowl along with a teaspoon of olive oil, a teaspoon of minced garlic, salt and pepper.
Then I had created a aluminum foil pouch for my vegetables to cook in.To do this I simply took a square of aluminum foil and added a half a cup of my prepared veggies to the center.
Then I pulled up the sides of the aluminum foil, sealed them at the top to create a pouch and placed my vegetable pouches into the coals of the fire for twenty-five minutes so that everything would be ready to serve at the same time.
Once my pizza had cooked for about 20 minutes to the point where the cheese was melted and the bottom of the crust was golden brown, I was ready to remove all of my food from the fire pit.
After gently pulling out my veggie packets, I opened them up to let my perfectly prepared side cool down.
Then I removed my Freschetta® Brick Oven® pizza from the grill and allowed it to cool slightly as well while I set out our plates.
Within minutes my entire meal was ready to serve and can I just say it was campfire food like we’ve never had before.
As we sat under the falling leaves with the aroma of pizza and veggies surrounding us, we felt like we were exactly where we were supposed to be doing exactly what we were supposed to be doing.
We relaxed by the campfire and enjoyed our meal, but the fun was not over yet because I still had one surprise up my sleeve. So when my guys were filled with pizza and veggies and totally content, I pulled out the perfect way to finish our glamping experience.
Since everything had been so glamorous for our outdoor fun, I decided I needed to give our S’mores a special makeover to make them fit the occasion. After laying out my Honey Maid graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars, I added my secret ingredient, bananas!
There is nothing that I’ve ever tasted that’s as good as grilled bananas and since we had the perfect two pronged S’mores skewers, it was easy to add a marshmallow to one side, a piece of banana to the other and grill them to perfection at the same time.
Once both the marshmallow and banana were grilled, we assembled our S’mores like we normally did. Except instead of just having the delicious tastes of graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows, we added a whole new flavor profile with the caramelized taste of the grilled banana.
As the last of our food disappeared and the comfort of our glammed up tent called our name, we realized that our evening of fall glamping had been perfect. It had taken the land we so knew we wanted and helped us turn it into an amazing camping experience in our back yard that felt like we were worlds away from home while still providing an experience that was comfortable, fun and above all unforgettable.
While I’ve always enjoyed camping in the past, this queen of her home has found a new love for the outdoors (and for my own back yard) through glamping.
Through the next few weeks of fall, chances are pretty good that you’ll find me glamming it up in my back yard in my amazing tent with Freschetta® pizza and Honey Maid S’mores in hand.
Because while it’s true that the days are now shorter and the cold weather is coming, I know that I’ve got the perfect glamorous way to warm up any Fall evening with a little glamping fun!
Now that I’ve shared how my family makes the most of our outdoor time with tons of glamping fun, I’d love to know which of these amazing ideas would make your glamping experience complete!
