Growing up in the South, I know a thing or two about putting together quick and easy Southern meals. In fact, some of my earliest memories are of helping my mama make casseroles or bakes. So when I was recently asked by The J.M. Smucker Company to create a Southern dish using Martha White® products, I knew exactly what I wanted to share with you.
Earlier this week, I told you all about my secrets for Southern cooking. And while I know these easy tips had you whooping it up and heading to Kroger to create your very own Southern style meal, I wanted to come back and share with you how we cook up a little something tasty here in the South. You see, casseroles and bakes have always been a big deal around here. In fact, I truly believe that you can put pretty much any combination of foods into a dish, top it with cheese and bake it for delicious perfection. But, to be fair, some things are better together than others. So inspired by my Martha White® Yellow Corn Muffin Mix, I decided to put together a flavorful Southern feast that focused on one of our favorite meals here in the South. And out of that inspiration, a delicious Southern Style BBQ Burger Bake was born.
The inspiration for this meal was actually an event we have quite often around here…a picnic. Because if you have a picnic in my neck of the woods, you better believe it’s going to include BBQ. So I decided that the only thing to do was take the classic BBQ tastes of a flavorful picni and add them all to one dish that is a real crowd pleaser in my home.
To start with I browned a pound of lean ground beef and drained off any remaining fat. Then I covered the bottom of one of my favorite casserole dishes (a staple in any Southern girl’s home) with the cooked beef.
Next, I topped my meat with BBQ sauce. Now, for those of you who live in the South, you know that BBQ sauce is a hot topic. Some like vinegar based but in my home, the only way to do BBQ is with tomato based sauce. After adding a liberal layer of BBQ sauce on top of my beef I was ready to really get creative.
I really wanted to incorporate other foods you would find at a Southern picnic so I closed my eyes, transported myself to an open field on a warm summer day and thought of the items that would make my mouth water. I quickly realized that you can’t have BBQ without some type of potatoes so next I cooked some shredded potatoes in a saute pan until they were slightly crunchy and placed them on top of my meat and BBQ Sauce.
Next to the party was a layer of onions and some shredded cheese. By this time my dish was looking pretty awesome but it hadn’t achieve Southern perfection yet.
Because if there is one think you need at a BBQ (or pretty much any other Southern event) it’s cornbread. So I quickly grabbed my Martha White® Yellow Corn Muffin Mix, added in a half of a cup of milk and mixed it up well.
Then I simply poured my prepared mix over the top of my cheese, creating a crust to seal in all the amazing Southern flavors.
After cooking my awesome dish on 400 degrees for 20 minutes, it came out of the oven smelling beyond delicious with a brown cornbread crust and tons of Southern flavors underneath.
I have to say that this is the type of meal that brings my entire family running to the table so I couldn’t wait to see their reaction once dinner was served.
As I dipped out serving after serving paired with fresh cole slaw, I knew I had found a way to create a new family favorite that captured all the tastes of the South.
From the perfect crust that was slightly sweet and perfectly crunchy to the swirling combination of favorite Southern flavors below, this was a meal that has it all. Cheese, meat, BBQ, potatoes and of course Martha White® cornbread made it into a meal that this Southern family will ask for again and again!
