I can’t believe that we’re just a few short weeks away from what is arguably the most important day of the year in my house….the Super Bowl. Seeing as how my three guys eat, sleep and breath football from August to February, to say the big game is a pretty big deal for us would be an understatement. In fact, we’ve been planning for it since December. We’ve had guests invited to our Super Bowl party for weeks. And my guys have let me know that when it comes to this year’s Super Bowl, I better step it up and come up with some brownies that blow away any I’ve made in the past.
You see, for the first time in a very, VERY long time, our team is still in the running to make it to the Super Bowl. After watching them have not so amazing seasons for years, that makes this Super Bowl even more exciting the past year’s. And since we just KNOW our Carolina Panthers are going to go all the way, we’re planning a sweet and colorful way to make our celebration memorable.
Since our home will be full of guests who I know love sweets, I’ve been planning for the past few weeks. And as soon as our team made it to the playoffs I hopped online and ordered some of our favorite candy from Amazon.com. It was really a no brainer choosing Skittles as one of our main candy selections since they are an an official sponsor of the NFL/Super Bowl. And instead of fighting lines for the candy that everyone wants at their party this year, I saved time and money by purchasing them online. But once I had my must-have Skittles in my virtual shopping cart, I started to get an amazing idea in my head. After adding Snickers Minis and Starburst Jelly Beans to my cart, I knew I had plenty of inspiration to make Super Bowl 50 extra sweet!
So I pushed order, waited two short days (thanks to my Amazon Prime shipping) and my package of sweetness arrived right on my doorstep!
As soon as I opened my box of goodies, I knew I had to give my Super Bowl creation a test run! After all, when you’ve got this much sweetness at your finger tips, you just have to try it out! So I ran to the pantry, followed my game plan and got to work creating a colorful game day brownie platter paired with bright bowls of candy that I knew would be the star of our Super Bowl party.
What You Will Need:
1 Bag of Skittles (with colors separated)
1 Cup of Butter
6 Ounces of Bittersweet Chocolate Chips
1 and 1/2 Cups of Sugar
1/8 Teaspoon of Salt
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
1 and 1/2 Cups of Flour
1/2 Cup of Snickers Minis (Diced)
Brown or Black Candy Melts
Football and Circle Cookie Cutters
How to Make Them:
This sweet game day treat really is pretty simple to whip up. I started by assembling my ingredients and letting them know the play of the day. Then I preheated my oven to 350 degrees and started my game plan for sweet success! To begin, I placed my butter and chocolate in a pan over low heat and heated it (stirring it continuously) until it was creamy.
Once my butter and chocolate were melted down, I immediately transferred the mixture into my mixer.
Next I added in my sugar and salt and blended them well to create a creamy yet slightly loose chocolate base.
With my base ready, I mixed in my eggs one at a time, beating the mixture in between eggs. Finally, I poured in my flour and mixed it in just enough to form a thick batter.
Now, I knew that I would be topping my amazing brownies with Skittles which would make them AWESOME but I decided to take things a step further and add Snickers Minis to the mix! I quickly removed about 20 Snickers Minis from their packaging and cut them into fourths.
Then I placed them in my batter, gave it one good stir, and was ready to put my brownies in the oven!
To make it easy to remove my brownies from the pan and cut them into shapes, I lined my baking pan with parchment paper and then poured my prepared batter directly onto the parchment paper.
After smoothing the batter out and making sure the edges of my parchment paper were turned down, I placed my brownies into my preheated oven and baked them for thirty-five minutes. Now, I’ll admit that I generally like my brownies a little gooey but I wanted these to stay together when I cut them out so I made sure they were completely baked and that a fork came out clean when inserted into the center.
Once my brownies were done I placed them on a cooking tray and walked away. Yes, this was hard. Yes, it tested every bit of willpower I had but to turn these brownies into something really amazing, they needed to cool COMPLETELY!
Now, patient I am not but somehow I managed to stay away until my brownies were cool. And while they were cooling, I got the kiddos involved and we sorted the Skittles so that once our beautiful brownies were cool, we could take them to the next level with a colorful addition.
After allowing our brownies to cool, I removed them from the pan by simply pulling up the parchment paper (pretty cool huh) and folding it down so that I could use my cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes.
I did a few footballs and a few circles and then I got to work on the most important part of my entire recipe….decorating my brownies! I really wanted to stick with a football theme so and I needed a way to make my Skittles stick so I quickly mixed together two sticks of butter, two cups of confectioners sugar, a tablespoon of vanilla extract and a half a cup of cocoa powder to create the perfect brown butter cream icing. After covering each brownie with it, I used lines of skittles to create the look of laces on my football shaped brownies.
Next, I took my round brownies and spelled out the world “TEAM” using my Skittles. While I would have loved to put GO PANTHERS here, sticking with team ensured that no matter who makes it to the Super Bowl, I’m prepared to celebrate!
Once I had assembled my brownies, I placed them on a platter, arranging them perfectly, and stepped back to look at my creation.
I have to say I was pretty impressed! Not only did I have a fun and colorful way to make Super Bowl 50 Sweeter but I had taken my brownies and made them really super special by adding Skittles and Snickers!
After adding a few bowls of Skittles, Snickers Minis and Starburst Jelly Beans to my set up, I felt confident that I had created the perfect Super Bowl celebration platter that all of my guests were sure to love.
And as if being pretty wasn’t enough (because let’s face it, this is a pretty impressive platter), these brownies taste divine! The rich chocolate paired with the delicious taste of Skittle is sure to be a hit with all your Super Bowl fans!
So, I’m ready for the Super Bowl! I’m ready to make our celebration sweet. And I’m really hoping that our team manages to take it all home! But even if they don’t, I love knowing that I’ve created the perfect sweet treat for making Super Bowl 50 memorable for all of my guests!
