Honestly, I never really thought much about diabetes growing up. I don’t remember knowing anyone who had it and it just wasn’t even on my radar. I thought my family was immune (as most people do) and the thought of living with diabetes just never entered my mind. So image my shock when my petite, active, physically fit mama was diagnosed as pre-diabetic when I was in my 20’s. At first I thought there had to be a mistake. Then I thought I just must not understand what we were being told. After all, someone who looked physically healthy and lived an active lifestyle could get hit with a diabetes diagnosis? Right?
Well, over the last ten years I’ve learned that all my ideas about diabetes were wrong. I’ve learned that it doesn’t discriminate by looks. Or by size. And I’ve also learned that for my mom, blood sugar can be managed by diet, exercise and making simple changes to her lifestyle. I’ve watched as my mom has overhauled her eating plan. I’ve seen her change the way she looks at staying physically fit. And I’ve walked along beside her as she’s discovered that she can still enjoy amazing recipes like this Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie while keeping her blood sugar under control.
For her, managing her pre-diabetic status is about limiting sugars and managing carbs. It’s about knowing what foods help regulate her blood sugar and what foods make it spike. And one of the things I discovered when researching items to have on hand while she’s at my home is that Glucerna makes awesome items that help regulate her blood sugar while allowing me to treat her to special snacks, just as I like to do with the rest of my family.
Knowing that Glucerna shakes are perfect to have on hand for her because they have CARBSTEADY, which includes slowly digestible carbohydrates designed to help minimize blood sugar spikes, I recently headed to Target to stock up for her upcoming stay.
I have to say I as thrilled with the selections and loved knowing that I was stocking my pantry with items that she can enjoy. But more than that, I wanted to create something really special for her to have in the mornings. You see, I’ve always been the type that loves to put something amazing in front of visiting family and friends. But knowing her restrictions, I wondered if I’d be able to do the same for her. I guess I really shouldn’t have worried because after discovering a Glucerna inspired Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie recipe, I’ve found a way to make her mornings tasty while helping her keep her blood sugar right where it needs to be to start the day!
What You Will Need:
1 8-Ounce Bottle of Glucerna Vanilla Shake
1 Cup of Plain Greek Yogurt
1/2 Cup of Sliced Strawberries
Sugar Substitute to Taste
How to Make It:
For me, nothing starts the day like a creamy smoothie and I have to say, this one really takes the cake…without causing her blood sugar to spike. After picking up my Glucerna shakes from Target, I simply grabbed some plain Greek yogurt and fresh strawberries! Once I got home, I sliced my strawberries and measured out my yogurt.
With all of my ingredients ready in only minutes, prep for this shake was super simple, meaning that my mom didn’t have to wait long for her morning meal.
After preparing everything, all that was left to do was add my yogurt and sliced strawberries to the blender.
Then I poured in my Glucerna Vanilla shake.
After blending for one minute, my smoothie was creamy and perfect.
I quickly sat it in the fridge to cool for twenty minutes while I cleaned up my kitchen and once I was ready to serve it, I poured it into glasses so I could enjoy it right along with my mom.
Surprisingly, there was no need to add the artificial sweetener I had on hand into our smoothie because it was just perfect the way it was. The sweet flavor of vanilla really came through and mixed with the natural sweetness of the strawberries to create a diabetic-friendly smoothie that tasted like a treat!
As I served it to my mom, I could see the surprise and delight in her eyes knowing that I was working with her to make sure her blood sugar stays exactly where it should while at the same time ensuring that she didn’t have to miss out on a super tasty way to start her day.
And really, this Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie is perfect for so much more than just mornings. With only 170 calories, 14 grams of protein and good carbs in each and every serving, it’s a great way to cool down after workouts or simply a special treat to enjoy in the afternoons.
And the best part is, this refreshing treat is the perfect way to ensure that my mom has diabetes-friendly options on hand any time she visits my house.
But I didn’t stop with just my Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie (although it was tempting to only fix that for the entire time my mom was visiting). Instead, I made sure she has ready-to-drink shakes and mini snack nutrition bars on hand for any time she’s hungry.
With great taste and the ability to help manage her blood sugar at home or on the go, they are the perfect way to welcome her into my home and make sure she has everything she needs to live life to the fullest while she is here.
