My kitchen is the hub of my new home. Honestly, that’s how I’ve always wanted it to be; a central location where the boys and I can do life together. In fact, when we were touring homes and telling our real estate agent what we were looking for, the first thing on my list was a big, bright kitchen where memories could be made. And amazingly, I found just what I was looking for. But as often happens, when we moved in, clutter piled up and the function of my amazing kitchen became, well, much less functional. There were books stuffed here. Odds and ends stuck there. And I noticed more and more that the boys would take off to their rooms the minute they entered the door because there just wasn’t a place in the kitchen to do crafts, homework and just hang out.
Frustrated by this feeling, I decided it was time to unleash clean and turn my kitchen back into the place everyone wanted to be. And for me, that meant clearing out the clutter, getting rid of the dust and dirt and transforming my cute little built in shelves into a kitchen craft station for the kids.
Now, before you start going “but I don’t have shelves like that in my kitchen”, let me say that you can create a craft station in any type of kitchen! All you need is a cleaned out cabinet or a few empty shelves (you can even get a little shelving system for the corner very inexpensively), craft supplies and a trusted way to clean up all those memory making messes.
Knowing that crafts are a way of life in my family and that with a preschooler and a middle schooler, homework often includes glitter, glue and a lot of creativity, I set out to bring the function back into my kitchen and create an area where they could let their imaginations run wild. To start with, I had to decided where I was going to put my kitchen craft station. And while now I see that my built in shelves were perfect all along, when I started this project they looked something like this.
These perfect shelves were a dirty, dusty, catch-all place for anything and everything that was laying around when I cleaned up each day. As I started to unleash clean on them, I was shuddering at what I found! But with a little help from Viva® Towels, I was able to get them cleaned out perfectly so that they were ready for my transformation.
With both the Viva® Towels and Viva® Vantage on hand, I took on that mess and took care of months worth of dust, grime and even a few food crumbs.
With the two different types of Viva® everyday towels that work like cloth and clean so much more than just spills, I was able to scrub, wipe and even dislodge stuck pieces of candy that had somehow made their way onto my shelves. Seeing how amazingly well Viva® Towels worked on these tough messes, I knew they had to be a permanent part of my kitchen craft station. After all, while the shelves were definitely dirty, I knew that two boys would soon be creating even bigger messes in the same area.
Once my shelves were cleaned out, it was time to figure out some organization for our crafting supplies. In the past I’ve just kept them all in a big chest (with a lid that I can close to hide the clutter) but to make the accessible to little hands, I knew I needed them to be visible. First, I placed my construction paper and white paper on the bottom shelf of my kitchen craft station, right below the new home for my must-have Viva® Towels.
But then I looked down at the huge box of crayons, markets, pipe cleaners, glitter and more and knew that some major decluttering and organizing was about to happen! Obviously one container for everything was not working for me. And as any good Southern girl knows, if you want to organize in style, there is no better way to do it than with trusty Mason jars. BUT, my mason jars had been sitting in storage since the move and were a little dusty to say the least. Thankfully, with a little help from the scrubby, terrycloth like texture of Viva® Vantage®, I was able to cut through the layers of dust and dirt and transform my Mason jars into the perfect crafting containers.
After cleaning all of my containers with my Viva® Vantage® towels, I separated my crafting supplies and stored them in a way so that they were easy to see and easy to reach.
After adding my supplies to one of my shelves, I was feeling pretty good about how my kitchen crafting station was coming together.
Finally, I added the kid-essentials that really make a mess like glue, glitter and paint to the shelf next to my Viva® Towels since I now knew that these items went hand in hand, with the first creating the mess and the second cleaning it up.
And just like that, my kitchen craft station was complete.
Everything the kids needed to make amazing, memorable messes was easy to find and the only thing I needed to clean them up was right on hand.
Now, whether they color outside of the lines, get a little glue on my counters or even decided that it’s the perfect day for a glitter craft (sigh), I’m ready with Viva® Towels that are strong enough to take on even their craziest messes!
And the best part is, organizing this one area of my kitchen has inspired me to keep the rest of it tidy and clean because now I no longer have craft items laying here and finished products laying there. Instead I’ve got the perfect organized system that make craft time all about fun, just as it should be, while keeping my entire kitchen looking orderly and great!
Going forward, messes anywhere in the kitchen don’t scare me because I know that from spilled drinks to dirty dishes, towel like Viva® Towels can stand up to the mess. But more than that, crafty, creative, amazing messes that I’ll one day miss don’t stand a chance. I’m free to let my kiddos get as creative as they want because keeping my new kitchen craft station and my entire area clean is now so very easy.
