Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. – Ibn Battuta
A wanderer. An explorer. A woman who travels the world. These are terms I never thought would describe my mother. Growing up we would travel a little here and there but for the most part, we were always home. Always together. I knew where to find her on special occasions and I could rest assured that she was never far. But then, a few years back, things changed. As she found herself being a single woman for the first time in 40 years after my dad’s passing, she started to travel. India. Africa. Israel. Her passport began to gain stamps. Her rewards program racked up miles. And I discovered that when it comes to having a mom who travels, coming up with gift ideas and ways to make the most of special days spent apart is essential.
While I have to say that she quickly taught me that she is the most prepared traveler in the history of travelers, this didn’t change the fact that I wanted to feel close to her even when she was a million miles away. I wanted to know that I had the ability to help her should she ever need it even though I couldn’t get to her physically. I wanted to feel closer to her when she traveled in every way I could…even financially. And so I began to research small ways that could bring us close even when she was far away. And with Mother’s Day quickly approaching, I put together a list of fabulous gifts for the traveling mom that are perfect for Mother’s Day or any other time of the year.
This one is a given but sometimes we overlook how much some new luggage can mean. With my mom, I know to look for luggage that is bright and different and easy to spot as she navigates the baggage claim area. Whether it’s a whole new bag or just a travel backpack that will allow her to jet through the airports hands free, finding the perfect luggage can be a perfect hit!
We all want to stay in touch but sometimes, that’s easier said than done. A great Mother’s Day gift idea for the traveling mom is calling cards that allow her to call from whatever country she is in without accumulating huge costs. Try contacting her wireless provider to see what options are available and will help you stay in touch.
I’ve discovered that my mom is not one of those people who can’t sleep on a plane so good reading material is always a hit for her! From magazines to books to even picking up an inexpensive e-Reader that isn’t a big deal if it gets lost or broken, providing reading materials for the airport and plane is sure to be a hit.
Have a mom who happens to be the traveler who has everything? I’ve discovered that a pretty passport holder makes a fabulous gift! Look for one that matches her luggage or her sense of style and make sure it’s sturdy for all the time she spends in the air.
Cash Gifts/Emergency Funds
While the above gifts are more about fun, let’s talk practical for a moment because since my mom started traveling I’ve discovered that the unexpected can happen and that when traveling internationally, finances are important. Thankfully I know that she has PayPal on her side and I’ve got Xoom on mine to help us both manage and move money quickly, leaving time for the things that matter….like seeing the sights and helping to build orphanages.
For me, knowing that her finances are safe when she travels and that she has access to the money she needs no matter where she is is a gift that keeps giving back! With PayPal and Xoom, I don’t have to worry that she’ll be stranded in a country without access to her funds and since she can manage her PayPal account from her own personal device, I know that her finances are always in her own hands.
But more than that, the ability for me to send her money when she needs it (or even when she doesn’t) securely and quickly through a services that I already trust makes Xoom the best Mother’s Day gift idea around in my mind. With Xoom, a Paypal service, I can send international payments in more than 40 countries around the world and not surprising at all is the fact that the number one recipient of Xoom payments is moms! So while in the past it’s been time consuming, insecure and expensive to send money abroad, I now have a secure, safe and fast way to sent my mom money when she travels with Xoom! Whether I need to send her funds for something unexpected or I simply want to send her a way to pick up an extra something for herself as a Mother’s Day gift, PayPal and Xoom save me time and stress by making the process extra easy!
With the easy to use Xoom app, I’m able to send money instantly overseas and I can select multiple ways for my mom to receive the funds including bank transfers, cash pick-up or deliver, bill pay and mobile reload. Even better, I can track each payment via SMS alerts and receive a text message when the money is received. So that gift that wouldn’t fit in her bag? Now I can simply text a picture, send the funds and know that no matter what country she is in, she’ll be able to find something amazing for herself!
Never in the time that my mom has been traveling have I felt better about the ability to send her funds whenever (and where ever) she needs them. And whether I choose to send something as a Mother’s Day gift or simply because, I love knowing that near or far, my mom is always close with PayPal and Xoom!
