As a mom of boys, pretty much every day in my home is an adventure. From the moment they wake up until they time they go to sleep, it’s constant motion, constant activity and the constant need to save the world; especially for my youngest. He’s going through a phase right now where superheros are all he thinks of. His room features them from top to bottom. Everything he watches is about them. And I personally think his super power is endless energy that allows him to go, go, go….just like they do. So it’s not unusual in our home for us to have a day filled with superhero themed activities and food. And through such a day recently, we discovered that as we go into the summer months, everyday of life is an adventure! With a little creativity, the right food to fuel us and of course a DIY Superhero set that includes an easy to make mask and cuffs which allow my little guy to transform himself in seconds, the options for fun are endless.
So, how did I come up with this idea. Well, any mom of boys knows that with the summer months upon us, it’s time to flex our creative muscles. And since his pre-K class is now officially over for the next few months, it falls on me to come up with crafts, meals and activities that fuel his imagination and make everyday an adventure. Inspired by this idea, I headed to Kroger to stock up on Hillshire Farm® Lunchmeat to help me create an unforgettable day of play with my little guy.
Once I had fuel for our day of superhero fun, it was time to get out, get creative and turn our huge back yard into a place that needed saving. The first step to make this happen was of course the right attire. As I asked my little guy what a superhero wears, he quickly explained that we needed a mask, a cape and some “shiny things for his arms”. As I thought about this list, I knew the cape was no problem. After rummaging through our bath towels, I had the perfect solution and simply had to attach it around his neck.
But the mask and cuffs were a little more challenging. After taking inventory of the items around my house, I pulled out a piece of cardboard from a recently discarded soda box and an empty toilet paper roll and got to work.
What You Will Need:
Empty Toilet Paper Roll
Piece of Cardboard
How to Make It:
To start my DIY Superhero set, I cut out a mask from my larger piece of cardboard and then cut my empty toilet paper roll in half.
After laying them both on an old box, I spray painted them gold (you can use any color you want). Then I allowed them to dry.
While the painted pieces of my DIY Superhero set were drying, I cut stars out of construction paper and then once they were dry, I let my little guy glue on the stars to make the set look exactly the way he wanted to.
Now, by this time we had worked up a little bit of an appetite but my kiddo was in full on superhero mode and I knew that not just any lunch would do. Knowing that if I put a regular sandwich in front of him he would just push it away, I pulled out my Hillshire Farm® Lunchmeat and set to work creating Superhero Spiral Sandwich Bites.
What You Will Need:
Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey
How to Make It:
Knowing that I only wanted the best ingredients to fuel our adventure, I laid out my wrap and cut it into a square. Then I covered the square with a thin layer of cream cheese, spreading it all out.
Next, I placed Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey over the top of the cream cheese, making sure it covered every inch.
Finally, I cut my avocado into thin slices and added the slices to the top of the Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey.
After rolling up my wrap from the end, it was ready to slice. Then all that was left to do was cut my Superhero Spiral Sandwich Bites into pieces and add them to a plate.
Instantly, I had a lunch that was perfect for fueling our adventure and by giving it a new look and a new name, my son was super excited about giving it a try!
With my lunch ready, I quickly tested the paint on my DIY Superhero Set and after discovering that it was completely dry, I punched hoes in the side of the mask and attached twine so that he could tie it around his head.
Then, the only thing left to do was enjoy the rest of our adventure. As we rushed around the yard saving the day, his giggles filled the air.
And when he got a little tired, I knew the only thing I needed to do to fuel his adventure was let him enjoy the Superhero Spiral Sandwich Bites I had prepared.
After enjoying each and every bite of his protein packed lunch that was made perfect by the delicious addition of Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey, he was ready to take off again and take on his next mission. After all, our day of adventure had just started and I knew without a doubt there was tons more fun to be had.
I know that in the coming months, there will be many afternoons like this; afternoons filled with laughter and adventure and a delicious lunch that is sure to perfectly power our days of play. And since I now know how easy it is to turn the backyard into an awesome adventure, everyday items into the perfect costume and Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey into a super meal, I encourage you to do the same.
