I’ll tell ya, during the year I am the queen of keeping my house fully stocked and organized. We never run out of toilet paper. Our paper towels are lined up to perfection in the pantry. And the dish detergent is always full. But now that summer is here, let’s just say that my mad stocking skills have taken a little hit. In fact, I’m discovering that in the summer chaos of my crazy home, I’m doing well to keep the kiddos busy. In addition to this wreaking havoc on my home, on more than one occasion during the few short weeks since school has ended I’ve found that I’m out of essential items. So, instead of coming up with my own creative solutions that always seem to backfire, this summer I’ve come up with a few simple tips to help me avoid running out of the everyday items I need.
Now, before I share my super ninja mom tips with you that will ensure you NEVER have one of those oops moments when you reach for toilet paper or dish detergent and it’s not there, let me tell you a few of the less successful methods that I’ve tried.
Washing the dishes with laundry detergent because you’ve run out of dish soap and have guests coming over DOES NOT WORK. Trust me on this one.
Using your hubby’s white t-shirts to clean the windows because you forgot to stock up on paper towels DOES NOT WORK. And honestly, it’s not the greatest thing for a happy marriage.
Sending the kids outside to “use a tree” because you forgot toilet paper? Well, my BOYS think it’s hilarious. As a girl, it’s decidedly less fun for me. Pass on this one ladies!
So now you see, I’ve put some major time into discovering what DOESN’T work. But in the process I discovered what does (awesome, right). So here’s a few little tips to help all you busy mamas avoid those oops moments that I mentioned above.
Don’t Wait Till You’re Out to Restock
Now, I’m not saying catalog the toilet paper (OK, maybe I do that but….) but do know when you’re running low. Do not (I repeat DO NOT) rely on kids or the hubby to tell you when you are about out of something because, well, it ain’t gonna happen. While most of the items you’ll likely need to restock are things you’ll have your hands on daily, make sure to do a little inventory once a week and restock BEFORE you run out completely!
Always Have a (Hidden) Backup Supply
Shhhh, don’t tell the guys in my house but I have a hidden backup supply of everyday essentials! It’s in the left hand side of….well, I can’t tell you where it is because I know my hubby is reading this! BUT, it’s there and I always have a few rolls of toilet paper, enough laundry detergent for at least one load and dishwasher tabs for when my mother-in-law calls to let me know she’ll be over unexpectedly.
Now, I know this may sound harsh but really, it’s a mama necessity. Remember, mama is the one who gets to deal with the “oh crap” moment when someone in the family realizes something is out so being prepared in a super sneaky way is just necessary.
