I want my kids to reach for the stars. To have dreams bigger than even I thought possible. And to feel that the sky is the limit when it comes to what they can achieve. I want them to reach higher and be the best that they can be. And so, as we’ve been watching the Rio 2016 Olympic Games come around, of course I have wanted both of my boys to see the athletes that have captured the attention of the world and be inspired by the amazing accomplishments that are becoming their defining moments.
Now, most of you know that my oldest…well, he’s an athlete. He’s never met a sport that he doesn’t love but during the warm months of summer, with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games looming in front of him, his love of swimming has come to life. Now I know we could write this off to the warm weather. Or say he’s just going through a phase. But ever since he was a baby, we’ve called him a fish.
He’s wanted to be in the water, learning new strokes and asking us to time him along the way.
And while his passion for the sport seems to have been re-ignited by the athletes who are now taking center stage in the world, I’ve seen a new drive in him as he considers whether his high school swim team might be the next logical step. Because while he’s always taken his sports seriously, there is just something different in his eyes this time. It’s like I can see behind the boy to a dream that is propelling him forward.
I honestly can’t say where this dream will take him….whether it will flame out in the pools of his school or see him on to larger stages with bigger crowds. But as his mom, I want him to have the option to take swimming as far as he can; to chase his dream as long as he has it and see where it might take him.
And because his dreams for himself are always going to spark bigger dreams in my mind for him, I’ve found simple ways to encourage his dreams, no matter what they are.
Always Show Up
I guess this really seems easy enough but for me, it can be a challenge to put my phone down and really pay attention. Not only does he want me to be there physically, but my athlete wants me to BE THERE MENTALLY as well.
No matter how he places, you better believe I’m going to be on the side of the pool encouraging, cheering and making a general fool of myself. Because while he may give me an eye roll afterwards, I see the smile that’s right underneath because he knows I’m proud of him no matter how he does.
Always Dream Along
It’s easy as a parent to not want to set your child up for disappointment; to temper their dreams with ones that we feel are more realistic. But all I want is for my son to dream big. He may not lasso the moon but I know if I dream along with him, he’ll end up among the stars.
Just as I’m supporting his dream and watching as his strokes become stronger and his time becomes less, I also want to support the Olympians who are inspiring him. After all, I’m sure they were once kids in a pool simply trying to be faster and swim better. And it’s fun to think about athletes like David Boudia and the path that his dream of diving has taken him on.
