Since becoming a mother, I’ve learned to look at childhood in a whole new light. It’s magical. It’s precious. It’s a time when for a child, anything should be possible. But unfortunately, that is not the case for every child. I’ll admit that in my little bubble of everyday life, I often forget that all children don’t have a magical childhood. Some are cold. Some are scared. And many, many children live their everyday life being hungry. All it takes is peeking over at my preschooler or watching my teenager to feel my heart begin to break thinking of children with empty bellies. And while it would be easy to simply feel sad but do nothing, that’s not who I am and it’s not who I want to raise my children to be. So, we’re finding solutions to make a difference. We’re discovering that giving back is about more than just doing something nice. And we’re coming up with everyday ways to be Hunger Heroes and fight childhood hunger.
So, I know what you’re thinking….life is busy, busy, busy and while I want to help, I just don’t have time. And I’m here to tell you something…..THAT’S NOT TRUE! As I’ve tried to teach my children to give back any time they can, I’ve discovered that we can all help fight childhood hunger in simple everyday ways. In fact, it’s so easy that for a while I did not even realize I was already doing it. Just in my home, we have three simple ways that we help to fight childhood hunger.
Donate To Your Local Food Bank
My children and I are big fans of donating to the food bank. They just love packing up food and knowing that they are making a difference. And let me tell you, it takes literally no effort to make these donations. Once a month I clean out the pantry and any shelf stable foods that we bought and did not use go to the food bank. In addition, I watch for buy one get one free sales at my local stores. Then I’m able to buy the items I already need while scoring a free one for donation. Pretty awesome right? And something about watching my kids put those items in the food bank donation bin just makes my heart so very happy!
Send Extras with Your Child
I’ve learned over the years that you never know if that child sitting next to your kiddo in the lunch room or playing next to them on the playground is hungry. In fact, I’ve been shocked more than once this summer when children at my youngest’s summer camp have gotten to lunch time and had nothing to eat. So, in a very non-invasive way, I’ve started packing extras to share. I’ve taught my little guy that if someone doesn’t have food, he should sit next to them and offer some of his. And without drawing attention or making a huge deal of the situation, he’s helping fight childhood hunger in his own very sweet way.
Become a Hunger Hero
Tyson Foods and Sam’s Club are teaming up to fight hunger. We’ve donated 1 Million meals over the last few years, help us double that and donate 1 Million this year alone.
While the ideas above are awesome, my absolute favorite way to fight childhood hunger is by becoming a Hunger Hero! It’s so easy and honestly, many of you may be hunger heroes without even knowing it! So how did I join this superhero club of childhood hunger fighters? Well, I’ve been participating in this awesome program for all four years that it’s been around, although I didn’t even know I was part of it for the first two years. How does that happen, right? Well, it happens because four years ago, Tyson® Foods found a way to allow everyday people like me join them in the fight against childhood hunger without even really knowing it! By partnering with Hunger Heroes, which is a charitable cause that highlights childhood hunger, Tyson Foods is showing me every shopping trip that it’s easier that ever to fight childhood hunger! If fact, it’s so easy that there is honestly no reason for everyone not to join in! Let me show you how I become a Hunger Hero each and every time I head to Sam’s Club for my bi-weekly shopping trip.
Having a house full of boys, Sam’s Club is essential to keeping my family’s bellies full. So, it’s somewhere I already shop. And it never fails that specially marked products that help fight childhood hunger are on my shopping list. Since we’re always looking for easy snacks and meals that fit in with our busy lifestyle, it’s easy to look for specially marked bags and boxes of Hunger Heroes products that my guys already know and love.
Now, here’s where things get really great. With each purchase of a box or bag of these specially marked packages, Tyson Foods donates a serving (4 ounces) of protein to a child in need. That’s right, this box ensured a donation.
So did this bag.
But that’s not all! With an array of eligible products like Tyson® Popcorn Chicken, Jimmy Dean® Mini Pancake Sandwiches and State Fair® Corn Dogs, so many of the items we choose to purchase from Sam’s Club regularly help fight childhood hunger! Take for example my boy’s breakfast favorite of Jimmy Dean Mini Pancake Sandwiches. Just by purchasing an item that my boys adore, I’m becoming a Hunger Hero. Yup, simply feeding my kiddos a quick and easy breakfast that they love helps to ensure that a hungry child gets breakfast as well. Pretty life-changing right….literally!
But we don’t stop with our fight against childhood hunger when breakfast is over because honestly, the list of delicious ways to be a Hunger Hero goes on and on. I could sit here and tell you that the only reason I choose to buy Tyson Popcorn Chicken, Jimmy Dean Mini Pancake Sandwiches and State Fair Corn Dogs each and every time I go to Sam’s Club is because they are quick, delicious meals that my kids can’t get enough of. But that wouldn’t be the whole story. Because in addition to tasting amazing and allowing me to put snacks and meals in front of my hungry kids quickly, the simple truth of the matter is, it feels good to make purchase that I know my family will love while at the same time helping to ensure other children aren’t suffering from childhood hunger.
It feels good to put a meal in front of my family that comes together quickly and brings them running to the table while also helping to make a difference in a cause that is so near and dear to my heart.
And it feels good knowing that an item that I would have purchased anyway simple because we love is going to make a difference in the life of a child.
So, now I have a challenge for each and every one of you. Join me in this fight. Turn around for just a second and take a look at your own child and imagine how different their life would be if they were hungry. And instead of stopping there and saying “what a shame” take action in a deliciously simple way and be the difference that you want to see in the world.
It’s time to join together. It’s time to join with Tyson Foods. It’s time for each and every one of us to stop sitting on the sidelines and instead become a Hunger Hero.
And now is the perfect time to fight childhood hunger because as if the program hasn’t been awesome enough the past years, this year Tyson Foods is expanding their donation from the 360k meals they donated last year to ONE MILLION meals this year. But they need my help. And your help. And even his help.
So head to Sam’s Club today and stock up on the easy meals and snacks that you and your family already love! Just be sure to look for special Hunger Heroes packaging!
You just might discover like I did that not every super hero wears a cape. Some just make smart purchases and prepare simple meals that everyone loves while finding an even smarter way to fight childhood hunger!
Tell me, why is it important to you to fight childhood hunger?
