I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone when I say my home is a football watching, game time cheering, sports loving place to be. As the only girl in a house full of boys, it just makes sense that I’ve developed a deep love for the game and that anytime college football is on, my family is watching. Because of our love of the game, we’ve come up with fun ways to celebrate over the years that help make college football sweeter. From fun recipes to game time traditions, in our home the only thing better than watching college football is watching it with an ice cold Dr Pepper® Cherry and ice cream football pops in hand.
Knowing that when it comes to game time refreshments I won’t settle for less than the best, I’ve been heading to Publix to stock up over the last few weeks. And since discovering that Dr Pepper and Nestle have teamed up to offer shoppers great deals at Publix for game time watch parties, tailgating and simply kicking back for the college games, it’s been the logical choice for all of my game time needs. In fact, just this past week when I was perusing the aisles to pick up our all important Dr Pepper Cherry and EDY’S® Ice Cream, I was thrilled to discover specially marked packages of Dr Pepper Cherry with some special football imagery!
After stocking up on the truly unique drink that has a signature blend of 23 flavors and is a college football tradition, I headed home to turn my EDY’S Ice Cream into the perfect treat to compliment this game time essential!
What You Will Need:
1 Gallon of EDY’S Vanilla Ice Cream
Metal Football Cookie Cutter
2 Cups of Chocolate Chips
1/4 Cup of Coconut Oil
Cookie Pop Sticks
1/2 Cup of White Candy Melts
Piping Bag and Small Round TIp
How to Make It:
First, let me just say that these Ice Cream Football pops pair perfectly with the always amazing flavor of Dr Pepper Cherry and are a great addition to any college football game! For that reason, I warn you not to make them unless you want to start a totally awesome tradition in your home because once your family has tried them once, they will be a game time necessity. To start, I pulled out my EDY’S Vanilla Ice Cream. With four generations of proven taste and the richest, creamiest flavors that everyone loves, it was the perfect starting place for my Ice Cream Football Pops.
After lining a glass baking dish with parchment paper, I spooned my EDY’S Vanilla Ice Cream into the dish.
Next, I used a large spoon to flatten the ice cream out and returned it to the freezer for about an hour to allow it to harden.
After removing my ice cream from the freezer and taking it out of my dish by pulling up on the sides of the parchment paper, I was ready to cut out my ice cream footballs. To do this, I simply took my football cookie cutter, quickly pushed it down into my ice cream and then pulled back up.
After using my fingers to gently push my ice cream football out of the cutter, I immediately placed it on a waiting cookie sheet, inserted a cake pop stick into the middle and placed it back in the freezer.
*Note: Obviously ice cream melts quickly. It’s super important to work near a freezer and refreeze your ice cream between each step of this recipe.*
Once my ice cream footballs were frozen solid, it was time to transform them. To do this, I added my chocolate chips and coconut oil to a bowl and heated it in the microwave in thirty second increments, stirring in between. My goal was to get a smooth texture that would harden quickly over the ice cream. After about a minute and a half, I had the consistency I wanted so I allowed it to cool slightly and then I spooned the chocolate mixture over my ice cream football pops.
Back onto the cookie sheet they went and (guess what?) back into the freezer, for long enough for the chocolate shell on my ice cream football pops to harden.
While I waited for the chocolate to set, I added my white chocolate candy melts to a bowl and repeated the process of melting them in the microwave. Once they were melted, I added them to a piping bag with a small round tip. One by one, I removed my ice cream football pops from the freezer and piped the laces onto the footballs, placing them back in the freezer once they were complete.
With my ice cream football pops ready for the college football game, it was time to pair them with our perfect drink….Dr Pepper Cherry.
I knew without a doubt that the creamy flavor of the ice cream football pops and the signature flavor of Dr Pepper Cherry would pair perfectly to create a combination that was worth cheering for.
After stocking our party fridge with Dr Pepper Cherry and pulling a few cold cans out to make them easy to grab, I was ready to watch some football.
I quickly added my ice cream football pops to a chilled tray, paired them with my Dr Pepper Cherry and called everyone to come enjoy what is a game time tradition in our home.
As we all ate our ice cream football pops and enjoyed our Dr Pepper Cherry, we knew it was football season simply by the tastes that we’ve been cheering for as long as I can remember.
