I’ll admit, I’m usually a last-minute, pull a Halloween costume together type of mom. For years, I’ve said I wanted to plan in advance and actually make my child’s costume instead of simply trying desperately to find something left in stock that’s his size. But for years, time has gotten away from me and I’ve failed to make it happen. But this year, with the idea of a Dalmatian Halloween costume in my head, I took a little time to plan in advance and I have to say, the results have me wishing I’d been using my creativity to come up with my kid’s Halloween costumes for years!
So, what made this year the year that I finally got it all together. Well, in all honesty, it boils down to the face paint. Since attending a football game where my youngest got his face painted a few weeks ago, all he’s been talking about is wanting face painting done again. He made it VERY clear that face paint had to be a central part of his Halloween costume and so, after talking through options with him and ruling out a variety of ideas, we finally settled on a super fun (and way easy to execute) Dalmatian Halloween costume.
What You Will Need:
1 Snazaroo Face Paint Kit
1 Long Sleeve White T-Shirt
1 Plain White Baseball Hat
1 Yard of Black Felt
Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
Now, I have to be honest with you guys…..being crafty is hit or miss with me at times. But this Dalmatian Halloween Costume was so easy to put together and in all honesty, I already had almost everything I needed in my home. To start, I laid out my white t-shirt and hat and then cut out circles in a variety of sizes from my black felt. After attaching my “dalmatian spots” all over my shirt and hat, I cut out two ears, glued them onto either side of my hat and the costume part of my work was done.
Now, I know I could have just left it at that but you have to remember, my little guy is face paint crazy right now and since I happened to have Snazaroo face paint from Amazon.com on hand, I was ready to complete his costume in a way cool way! Just in case you’re not familiar with Snazaroo, they are a maker of face paint, kits and accessories for kids and their mission this Halloween is to make it easy for parents like me to “Paint a Smile”. With a line of face paints made in the UK with FDA approved ingredients, this Snazaroo face paint is top-quality and is safe for my son’s sensitive skin since it’s paraben and fragrance free, non-toxic and washable! So of course it was the perfect starting point for our Dalmatian Halloween costume makeup. To start, I simply opened my Snazaroo face paint and removed the covering from the colors I wanted to use.
Next, I added a little water to my sponge and started spreading on the white Snazaroo face paint as the foundation for his Dalmatian Halloween costume face paint.
I was thrilled at how easily the Snazaroo face paint went on and felt great using it on my son since it’s fully compliant with the US and EU toy and cosmetic regulations. After covering his entire face with white face paint, I had the base for the rest of our creation.
Once his white Snazaroo face paint had set for a few seconds, I went to work creating the Dalmatian Halloween costume look. After pulling out my brush that came with the set and wetting it slightly, I drew on a black nose and added a black patch around one of his eyes.
Next, I colored in the patch and added a few Dalmatian spots here and there all over his face.
After drawing on his black Dalmatian mouth and added some whiskers, I was thrilled that our Dalmatian Halloween costume look was coming together in a totally cute way!
With the majority of his face paint in place, I decided we needed to add a floppy tongue to make our Dalmatian Halloween costume complete and since Snazaroo has a wide range of colors to help parents achieve the perfect look, it was easy to do. I simply rinsed off my brush and then used the red face paint to draw on a tongue and added a black line down the middle.
Just like that, we had fun Halloween face paint in place and it had only taken about ten minutes for this novice mama to create a look that totally thrilled my little guy. After adding the shirt and hat I had made along with some black sweatpants, his Dalmatian Halloween costume was complete and I have to say, I was pretty proud of the results.
With very little time and just a little creativity, I had been able to create the perfect Halloween costume for my little guy. And seeing the look on his face as he barked and laughed caused me to savor the moment and know that I had done more than just put together a costume….I had created an amazing memory.
As we move into the trick-or-treating season, I know I’ll be pulling out my Snazaroo face paint and my homemade Dalmatian Halloween costume many more times. And who knows? I may whip up another idea or two for all the different Halloween gatherings we’re planning to attend because with the inspiration of Snazaroo, I can feel great about coming up with creative ideas regardless of my artistic skills (or lack there of). In fact, with Snazaroo’s easy to use colors, glitters and stencils, the looks I can create for Halloween, birthday parties and playdates are endless.
