I have always been an avid reader. It’s how I relax and unwind from the day. It’s my entertainment of choice on cold winter days and my go-to activity when I’m by the pool. It’s what I enjoy doing on quiet evenings at home and during breaks from the craziness of the day. And while I’ve never met a book I didn’t like, I recently discovered that historical fiction is my favorite genre when it comes to reading for pleasure. I love to be transported back in time and I especially love reading about the reigns of queens. Knowing that most of my friends and family are avid readers as well, I was recently inspired to create a Book Lover’s Gift Basket featuring my new favorite novel, Victoria by Daisy Goodwin.
I have to admit, I was drawn to this book the minute I read the description of it. Through the story of a young queen coming to power shortly after her 18th birthday, Daisy Goodwin took me back in time on an adventure of a young girl who, while appearing unprepared to rule according to most of those around her, had a determination about her that led her to become a powerful monarch. After a sheltered childhood in which her mother and her mother’s adviser kept Alexandrina Victoria away from court and secluded from the outside world in order to have the most sway on her when she later became a monarch, she always knew she wanted to break away and rule her own way. And while she often struggled for the right protocol and ettiquette, she stood strong and exerted her convictions.
With help from a key adviser that she learns to lean on, this book takes you through a time in Queen Victoria’s life that is often overlooked. From coming to power to learning to reign to the journey for love, I can honestly say that I couldn’t put this book down. I found myself wanting to read just five more pages at night and finding times to sneak away for a few minutes of reading during the day. By really developing Victoria into a complex character who could at times be childish while at other time be wise beyond her years, Daisy Goodwin created a story that every woman can relate to. And while I won’t tell you any more of the story because I don’t want to spoil the unexpected turns in the book, I do encourage you to pick it up for yourself and anyone you know that loves historical fiction!
In fact, I loved Victoria by Daisy Goodwin so much that I knew I HAD to gift it to all of my historical fiction loving friends this holiday season. Inspired by the time frame and the way the book made me want to curl up and read until I was done, I decided instead of simply gifting this awesome book, I would make it into a Book Lover’s Gift Basket! To start, I thought of all the things that I had enjoyed while traveling through time and experiencing the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. My essentials were of course a cozy blanket to snuggle up with, a mug for my very English tea (to match the English historical fiction) and of course Victoria by Daisy Goodwin!
After pulling my initial items together, I added in a scented candle and filled my mug with bags of relaxing tea that are perfect to pair with an afternoon of reading.
But of course the central part of my Book Lover’s Gift Basket was Victoria by Daisy Goodwin, the book that had both delighted and entertained me and inspired my perfect gift basket.
After adding all my Book Lover’s essentials to my gift basket, I stepped back and took at look at what I had created and I have to say, I wanted to stop right then and there and pull the book back out and snuggle in for a second trip through Queen Victoria’s early years.
And don’t worry….I’m sure I’ll be doing just that. But I’ll also be gifting additional copies of Victoria by Daisy Goodwin to my book loving friends and family because as a book lover myself I know that when you find an amazing book like this one, you just have to share!
Do you want to fall in love with a young Queen and follow her journey this holiday season? If so, I highly encourage you to pick up Victoria by Daisy Goodwin. With a thoughtful plot and historical details woven throughout, it’s a perfect book for holiday reading (or any other time of the year). You can preorder this historical fiction book here or pick it up for yourself here when it comes on out November 22nd. But no matter how you read it, I really think you’ll enjoy this journey back in time!
Tell me, who do you know that would love to receive this Book Lover’s Gift Basket?
