With my boys differing in age so much, it’s rare that they can share an iconic childhood experience. It’s not often that I can walk into a room and be taken back almost fifteen years to my first son sitting mesmerized in front of the television as learning became fun. But since the return of the Teletubbies, I’ve had the chance to watch learning come to life in an entertaining way for my youngest son, just as it did during my first journey into motherhood. I’ve listened to the recognizable sounds and watched my son be captivated by his on screen friends. And more than anything, I’ve rediscovered that making learning fun doesn’t have to be hard when you’ve got help from some of your favorite colorful friends!
Now, those of you moms who have been around for a while (like me) probably remember the Teletubbies fondly. Debuting in 1997 and viewed by over ONE BILLION children around in the world, this show is without a doubt one of the most iconic children’s brands of all time. Airing in 45 different languages, all it takes is a peek of one of the four familiar characters and you’re likely transported to a time spent sitting on your living room floor watching along with your child. Now, the Teletubbies have returned to TV screens on Nick Jr. with brand-new episodes that are designed to appeal to a whole new generation and I have to say, my kiddo thinks it’s pretty awesome!
You heard me right….the show that has captured the imaginations of children for years is back and I have to say, it’s better than ever! With newly modernized features and amazing new production techniques, the Teletubbies have combined recognizable characters with great new updates like the Touch Screen Tummies and Tubby Phone smart phone! Just as technology and learning has changed over the past decade, the Teletubbies have also changed to ensure they are connecting with a new generation in a way like never before! With carefully designed episodes and toys especially for children six months to three years, I’m loving how these fun friends are capturing preschooler’s imaginations and promoting early development! Even though my little guy is slightly older than the target age range, all it takes is turning on the show and he’s instantly mesmerized.
While I’ll admit that the colorful Teletubbies and the fun story lines are what draws him in, I adore knowing that every core element of the Teletubbies has been carefully crafted to encourage a learning experience based on a social and emotional approach. With a slower pace that allows time for children to make their own responses and actually have a conversation with the show, the Teletubbies are helping children develop their physical, emotional, cognitive, communications and social skills in a fun way that’s all about exploring, experimenting, experiencing and enjoying their beloved Teletubbies.
With silly stories and fun ways to interact in every episode, the Teletubbies make it fun to learn through laughter while teaching children to be themselves and building their confidence and communication skills! They may think they are just having fun watching a favorite episode but they are really beginning to focus on sounds and language, interpret non-verbal skills and even imitate the characters on the screen! But the best part for this mama who has a child that was very slow learning to talk is that Teletubby laungauge (or “Tubby Talk”) is based not on the way adults talk but instead on young childrens’ first words. Trust me when I say this is huge when it comes to helping children feel more confident about communication! As an added bonus, research shows that young children’ find this “Tubby Talk” engaging which encourages them to pay more attention to the adult speech around it. Between this fantastic technique that encourages listening and games to join and play with words to encourage interaction, Teletubbies is a show that is all about learning while also being tons of fun!
And now, the Teletubbies fun is getting an extra special boost because very soon, there will be a release of a brand-new Teletubbies product line in the US. That means an even more hands on experience for your Teletubby loving child! My little guy fell in love with the soft plush Lullaby Laa-Laa the minute he saw it.
He was thrilled that one of his favorite Teletubby characters from Nick Jr. was in his very own home. He quickly attached to his new 10″ friend that boasts a built-in light pattern and musical sounds effects and couldn’t get enough of the night light beams that shines on the wall whenever Lullaby Laa-Laa’s tummy is pressed! As the first toy to accompany the new series, this cuddly friend will soon be joined by a new line of Teletubby toys available in the US and is a must have for the Teletubby loving kiddo!
While for my little guy, Lullaby Laa-Laa quickly became a night-time friend, I found he was also carrying his new toy around the house, holding it up and saying the Telebubbies line of “Eh-oh” any chance he got. And each day when he gets to enjoy his episode of Teletubbies on Nick Jr., his new plush friend is in his arms.
As he laughs along and responds to the characters on the screen, the Lullaby Laa-Laa in his arms makes the experience even more interactive and gives him a fun way to bring his favorite character to life and make the show even more real in his little brain.
In this mama’s mind, pairing the learning experience of the Teletubbies show with this awesome toy designed for children 18 months and up ensures that learning never gets boring. It never gets old. And it’s always fun.
