There are few things I love more than cooking…except maybe cooking with my kids. With the age difference between my two boys, any time I can bring them together in the kitchen where we can all connect over a fun and messy recipe (Messipe), it’s a win in my book. While I can’t say that this happens every weeknight, during the weekends we really love to cook our favorite family dishes that tend to be a little messy and a lot delicious…like my boys’ always begged for Sausage and Spinach Lasagna!
Now, as a mother of boys it’s only fair that I let you in on a little secret. When I ask my boys to cook with me their first question is always “What are we making?”. Whatever my answer is tends to be followed by a calculated look in their eyes as they try to figure out how much of a mess they can make in my kitchen if they help. While I’ll admit that I tend to be a clean-as-I-go cook, my boys love to just jump in, get their hands (and pretty much everything else in my kitchen) dirty and have a good time. That’s why they love making our Sausage and Spinach Lasagna so much. There’s squishing and sloshing and honestly, just total chaos at times. Where I used to dread making this dish with them because I knew what a mess it would create, I’ve recently learned to embrace our Messipe (messy recipe!) with help from Palmolive® Ultra Strength™! But before I get to the clean up, let me share how the boys and I make this deliciously messy dish!
What You Will Need
1 Pound of Mild Ground Sausage
1 Large Sweet Onion
1 Teaspoon of Cooking Oil
2 Cups of Your Favorite Spaghetti Sauce
2 Large Eggs
4 Cups of Mozzarella Cheese
15 Ounces of Ricotta Cheese
1 Cup of Parmesan Cheese
1 Box of Oven Ready Lasagna Noodles
2 Cups of Fresh Spinach
2 Tablespoons of Fresh Parsley (and more for garnish)
How to Make It
This Sausage and Spinach Lasagna is fairly simple to make but it can (and almost always does) get a little messy in the process. To start, I diced my onion into small pieces and added it to a pan with my ground sausage and olive oil and cooked it over medium heat, stirring it constantly. Once my meat was completely cooked, I let my older son add in the spaghetti sauce and stir it while it simmered.
Now, one thing I’ve learned about simmering sauce over the years is that no matter how slow you cook it, it pops and splatters over the side! But I don’t have to worry about that when we’re cooking because I’ll tell you more about how Palmolive makes clean-up from our Messipe easy a little later. But back to the recipe. While my older son is manning the stove, my youngest gets to have a little fun of his own by adding the Ricotta Cheese, Eggs, 2 Cups of Mozzarella and the Parmesan cheese to a large bowl.
Once all the ingredients are added to the bowl, he’s able to squish it all up with his hands to create the cheese layer for our Sausage and Spinach Lasagna. Now let me say, if you have littles, this is a crazy fun step of the recipe for them! Just make sure they wash their hands when they are done.
While my boys are manning their two areas of the recipe, it’s up to me to gather up my pan, lasagna noodles, parsley and spinach and get it all prepared. Then, putting together our Sausage and Spinach Lasagna is as easy as layering it into a pan. To start, we add a layer of no bake lasagna noodles to the bottom of the pan and my youngest squishes in the cheese mixture on top of the noodles, adding a little fresh parsley once the cheese layer is perfectly smooth.
Next, I’m able to spoon in half of a sausage and sauce mixture. Even if the kids aren’t helping with this step, it never fails that I sling a little sauce but it’s all good! It’s part of the process, right?
After my sauce, it’s time for a cup of Mozzarella Cheese and a layer of fresh spinach.
Then we repeat the whole process, finishing our dish with the layers of spinach and cheese so that it’s ready to place in the waiting oven.
After adding aluminum foil over the top of my Sausage and Spinach Lasagna, it’s into the oven on 375 degrees for fifty minutes, followed by an additional five minutes with the aluminum foil removed to brown the cheese.

Going forward, I’ll continue to bring the kids into the kitchen with me. I’m sure we’ll be making our Sausage and Spinach Lasagna time and again.
