It’s hard to believe that it’s already that time of year when the kiddos are back in the classroom and school supply lists are in parents hands. My boys have already started their school year and while I’ll admit that the summer was tons of fun, I’m glad they both go to school that has them excited about being back in the classroom. As I’ve prepared for the school year, I’ve stocked up on lunches, snacks, supplies and of course Wet Ones® Hand Wipes to ensure that their transition back into the classroom is seamless and of course germ free. But this year, I decided to get a little creative when it came time to send in all my supplies (yes, I may still aspire to be the teacher’s pet) and decided to turn all those essential school supplies that I’ve been stocking up on into an adorable School Supply Cake! Now, I have to say, it turned out super cute and I totally get an A+! So, just in case you want to be the top parent it your kiddo’s class, I figured it was only right to share my School Supply Cake Tutorial so that every child can go back to school with the perfect teacher gift that’s packed full of fun school supplies and of course the classroom must-have of Wet Ones® Hand Wipes!
Now, I know it’s tradition in many homes to go down the school supply list that is provided at the beginning of the year and pack them all up in bags and boxes to take them to school. However, I’ll admit that I’m “that mom” that likes to make things a little more fun. I like to find ways to get my kiddos excited about heading back into the classroom. And, honestly, I like to have something special to bring a smile to the teacher’s faces during those first few weeks of school. This year, as I went through our lists of mandatory items, I wanted to stand out…to be different. Since it’s my little guy’s first grade year, I wanted to start the school year off with something that was extra fun! After a little thought, I knew nothing’s as much fun as a cake for any special occasion so why not create a School Supply Cake to make back-to-school extra fun? Knowing that this creative idea was sure to be a hit with both my first grader and his teacher, I stocked up on the school supplies we always think of (markers, pencils, crayons, erasers) and then added in some that are often forgotten, like Wet Ones® Hand Wipes. With their ability to clean up messy hands and kill 99.99% of germs when water isn’t available, I knew that America’s #1 Hand Wipe (*#1 claim based on scan data for 52 weeks ending 6/17/17) was the perfect addition to my essential school supplies. Armed with all my supplies, I got to work creating the perfect School Supply Cake that’s adorable and has tons of back-to-school essentials included in it.
What You Will Need
Wet Ones® Hand Wipes (40 Count Canister & 20 Count Travel Pack)
60 Skinny Markers
20 Decorative Pencils
26 Large Crayons
30 Large Pieces of Chalk
6 Large Pink Erasers
Variety of Ribbon (Primary Colors)
1 Large Round Wreath Foam
2 Medium Styrofoam Disk
1 Small Round Styrofoam Ball
Double Sided Tape
How to Make It
While I’ll fully admit that this School Supply Cake takes a little bit of time to put together, the end result is so worth it and for me, it was a perfect craft to do with my kiddo to get him excited about heading back to the classroom. To start, I wanted to create a base for my School Supply Cake that would give it a sturdy foundation, much like the first grade will do for my son. So, I quickly pulled out my skinny markers and pencils and used double sided tape to attach them all the way around my foam wreath.
I chose to create a pattern of two markers and one pencil at the suggestion of my little guy but the great part about this School Supply Cake is that no two cakes have to be the same and instead can express individuality and personality! Once I had all of my markers and pencils attached to my foam wreath, I was able to tie a ribbon around it and set it aside.
Next, I moved on to my second layer. After securing a medium foam disk on top of my decorated foam wreath, I again used my double sided tape to secure large pieces of chalk all the way around my disk, creating the second layer of my School Supply Cake.
Now, I’ll admit that things had been pretty easy up to this point but I was getting ready to get to the toughest layer. After cutting my foam ball in half to create a platform for my top layer (more on that later), I needed to secure my crayons around it. I quickly found that this is easier said than done but after a few tries, I was able to lay out my crayons and use double sided tape to secure them to each other.
Then, I simply wrapped them around my half ball and secured them (quickly) with a piece of ribbon to keep them exactly where I wanted them.
With three layers of adorable school supplies in place, it was time for my finishing touches and I had truly been saving the most important item for last. Now, as a mom of a little boy, I know that all these years of telling my son to share would one day come back to haunt me and last year, I discovered that little boys share germs better than anything else! Knowing that we use Wet Ones® Hand Wipes at home to kill 99.99% of germs on our hands when we don’t have access to soap and water, I wanted to ensure this same germ fighting power was available in my son’s classroom. While my initial idea included topping my School Supply Cake with the classic canisters of Wet Ones® Hand Wipes, as soon as I discovered the Specially Marked Wet Ones® canisters and travel packs that feature two of Universal Orlando Resort’s hit attractions – Shrek 4D and Transformers™: The Ride-3D, I knew I had found the perfect finishing touch for my School Supply Cake. The packaging also includes a sweepstakes for the chance to win a trip to experience these rides for yourself at Universal Orlando Resort™!
Not only did the Universal Orlando Resort™ packaging make the Wet Ones® Hand Wipes even cooler but they were perfect for my little boy! And since I knew that these easy-to-use hand wipes are hypoallergenic and clean better than hand sanitizers, I could trust that they would make the perfect additional to my School Supply Cake. After nestling them into the top layer of my School Supply Cake along with my large pink erasers, I knew that my creation was complete.
I quickly added a little ribbon here and a few finishing touches there and when I stepped back to inspect my work, I was thrilled with the result.
In one adorably perfect School Supply Cake, I was able to included a variety of back-to-school essentials that make the transition back to the classroom easier for both my student and his teacher. But equally important, I had found a way to introduce the germ killing power of Wet Ones® into the classroom in a fun way that I know will grab everyone’s attention thanks to the adorable packaging featuring characters from two attractions that you can experience at Universal Orlando Resort™
Sending my first grader back to school with this School Supply Cake not only earned me major brownie points as a mom but it was also the perfect way to stock my son’s classroom with essentials that will be used all year long! From markers and crayons to create perfect projects to Wet Ones® Hand Wipes to ensure that beautiful art work is the only thing he brings home, I’m feeling great knowing that I found an adorably creative way to make back-to-school even more fun this year!

This is so cute. I make diaper “cakes” for baby showers and other “cakes” which I gift as housewarming, engagement and anniversary gifts but I’ve never thought of making a school supply “cake”. This would make such a great gift for our kids’ teachers. Thanks for sharing.
