Over the past few months, I’ve been sharing all types of fun home renovation ideas with you. We’ve talked about kitchens, bathrooms, energy efficient improvements and more but for me, one of the most important areas in my home is the floor. Perhaps it’s because I have kids that love to get down on the floor and wrestle with each other. Or maybe it’s the fact that we recently added a pup to our family. Whatever the reason, having flooring that’s durable, easy to keep clean and holds up well to the craziness that is my life matters so much! Between my old home and my new one, I’ve had about every type of flooring possible. I’ve replaced carpets, I’ve upgraded to laminate, I’ve replaced kitchen floors and more and through it all, I’ve learned a thing or two about the considerations that are important when you’re choosing flooring for a new or existing home. Here are my tips for how to choose the right flooring for your home.
Now, chances are that at some point you’ll be in the position to choose new flooring for your home. Whether it’s during construction, during a remodel or when you’re preparing your home for sale, the right flooring is a big decision that can have a huge impact on the way your home looks and functions. No matter what the reason for looking at flooring, it’s important to consider a few key factors to ensure you choose the right flooring not only for your home but also for your lifestyle! Considerations like moisture, durability, color retention, fading, soil and stain resistance and how it will look for years to come are all important factors. You can find out more about these considerations here. However, in my experience, choosing the right flooring comes down to a few simple steps and a little help from Sears Home Services.
Consider the Aesthetics
While for me, durability is important, I’m a big visual person and want my home to look a certain way….and that includes my flooring. When we first moved into our previous home, everywhere but the kitchens and bathrooms were covered with pristine, white carpet. While I loved the look when we were considering the home, I quickly discovered that white carpet really doesn’t stay white for long…especially when you have kids and pets! Within months, I was left with a dingy grey look that I absolutely hated. While I should have been enjoying my new home, I quickly found myself looking at flooring options because honestly, I was embarrassed anytime I had guests over because of the dingy look the previously white carpet caused. While it was completely functional and we kept it clean, the way it looked was such a huge deal to me that I learned a very important lesson….always consider how flooring will look AFTER it’s been lived on. Some easy ideas to combat this problem are adding carpet with more color, looking into piles and textures and even considering laminate flooring.
As I researched how to handle my dingy carpet problem, I quickly discovered that Sears Home Services has tons of options including tile, carpet, laminate (more on how awesome this can be later) and resilient and luxury vinyl that comes in a variety of shades and patterns. I quickly discovered that affordable flooring can be stunning and all it takes is a little time and research to find out what’s right for your home!
Remember that Different Rooms Have Different Flooring Needs
While I quickly realized that I wanted to rid my previous home of it’s white carpet, I wasn’t sure that I wanted a fully carpeted home. I knew that carpets in bedrooms make for much better mornings (I personally hate stepping out of bed onto a cold floor!) but I wanted something in our high traffic areas like the living room that stood up better and was easier to clean. I came to the conclusion that, as in most homes, a mixture of flooring can be used to create a layout that flows well and meets all your family’s needs.
For us, that meant durable carpet in the bedrooms (be sure to check out these carpet spot cleaning tips for your carpeted areas), laminate in the living areas and tile in the kitchen and baths. Once we had made that determination, we looked for color pallets that blended well with each other and that gave the flow of the home and cohesive feel. By customizing our home with the flooring that was right for each and every area, we were able to find a mixture that worked well for us, was durable and met all of our family’s needs!
Factor In Your Lifestyle
Along with choosing different flooring for different rooms, it was important for us to factor in our lifestyle. As a mom of two boys and a dog, durability was a close second to aesthetics on my list of most important factors! Growing up in a home with wood floors, I knew that rocks and dog claws can quickly wreak havoc on natural wood. Wanting the look of natural wood but not wanting the cost or the upkeep, we choose laminate floors for our previous home and I have to say, I loved the results!
We were able to achieve that wood look that is so beautiful without the worry or the cost that comes along with wood and for my family, it worked perfectly! I adored the durability and how easy it was to keep laminate clean! For us, it was a great decision to replace our carpet with laminate.
