I consider myself a fresh foods type of gal….if there’s a fresh option to the items I prepare and eat, I’m generally going to go with it. However, I so often find that when dealing with fresh produce, my food goes bad so quickly! After years of making almost daily trips to the grocery store to ensure that I had the freshest fruits and veggies for my beloved salads, I recently got smart and found the the best way to keep my product fresh longer with Rubbermaid FreshWorks Containers! Since discovering this easy way to keep to keep my produce fresher longer, I’ve been rethinking the way I look at my food and also creating some crazy tasty recipes using only the freshest ingredients! In honor of this, I HAD to share with all of you not only my totally mouth-watering Pear, Fig and Gorgonzola Salad but also my easy tips to help keep produce fresher longer!
Now, before I get to my salad (which is an essential for busy days when you need a fresh, easy and OMGood lunch) let’s talk a little more about produce. I’ll tell ya…..produce has long been a thorn in my side. I absolutely ADORE fresh produce but keeping it fresh is so blasted hard! For such a long time, I’ve felt like I’m wasting money because any time I would buy more than a day’s supply of fresh fruits and veggies, they always seemed to go bad before I could enjoy them. Tired of wasting money and ending up with a trashcan that was better fed than I was, I went on a search for easy ways to keep produce fresh longer. With two simple steps, I’ve extended the life of my produce longer than I ever could have imagined!
Tip 1: Pay Attention to Ripeness
It’s long been a habit of mine to look for perfectly ripe plums, avocados that are just slightly firm and bananas that are the exact right color of yellow. However, buying perfectly ripe produce means that it won’t stay perfectly ripe for long! I’ve started purchasing product that’s a little less ripe, allowing me more time to enjoy it and I’ve found that I throw away much less of my fruits and veggies. However, buying produce that can continue to ripen in my home without going bad is only the tip of the iceberg. In addition, storing my produce in the right containers helps them last longer!
Tip 2: Use Rubbermaid FreshWorks Containers
I’ll admit, I used to bring all my produce home, leave it in the bags and containers it came home in and throw it in the produce drawers of my refrigerator. No wonder my produce was going bad so fast, right? But I’ve changed my ways and started storing all my produce in Rubbermaid FreshWorks Containers with the Rubbermaid FreshVentTM system!
These innovative containers from the storage brand I’ve trusted for years uses patented FreshVentTM technology to keep produce fresher up to 80% longer* than traditional produce packaging. In addition to being sturdy, see-through storage that allows me to organize my refrigerater, FreshWorks Containers use a revolutionary built-in FreshVent lid that naturally regulates the flow of oxygen and CO2 in and out of the container to create the optimal environment to keep produce nearly as fresh as the day it was picked! Add to that the CrispTrayTM at the bottom that elevates produce away from moisture and promotes proper airflow to help reduce spoilage and I’ve got the perfect way to store produce to keep it fresher for longer!
Not only do my dishwasher safe Rubbermaid FreshWorks containers eliminate my need to go to the grocery store more often but they also reduce the amount of food I’m throwing out, saving me time and money! It has been found that as a result of throwing away fresh produce, Americans waste $24 billion worth of produce every year, which is the equivalent of $192 per household. (Source: USDA 2014) Thankfully, I’m no longer one of those Americans and am instead able to make the most of my produce with easy-to-use Rubbermaid FreshWorks Containers that now come in a variety of sizes that fit ALL my product needs (even my oversized pears)!
So, now that I’m being able to keep fresh produce on hand and actually enjoy it instead of throwing it out, I’m whipping up delicious, produce-heavy meals that satisfy my fresh food need….like my Pear, Fig and Gorgonzola Salad! This Vegetarian dish that has walnuts added for protein is amazingly delicious and by using my FreshWorks Containers, I’m able to buy all the ingredients for a week’s worth of salads at one!
