While I don’t consider myself an overly strict mom, I do pay close attention to what my children are allowed to do. Yes, I call parents when they are invited to stay with a friend. Yes, I research places that they want to visit. Yes, I’m say no to toys and snacks and video games on a daily basis because I don’t feel like what they are asking for is a good option for them. In fact, recently my kids have been telling me that I always say no and they’d love it if just for once I said yes. I’ll be honest, hearing this really got to me. While my normal response would be “One day you’ll understand that all those no’s were simply wanting what is best for you”, I decided that I wanted to create a special day of yesses for my two boys. Once I had come to that conclusion, I needed to think back through all those things they had been asking for and decide what to do with our day of yesses. Through this process I discovered that while kids need to hear no, they also need to hear yes at times. With that in mind, here’s why (and how) I’m saying yes to my kids more often!
Saying Yes Can Help Create Memories
I’ll admit it…I sometimes get caught up in all the craziness of life and forget that saying yes is an important part of childhood….it’s the thing that memories are made of. Recently, on a cloudy day when the kids were off school and just hanging around the house, they asked if we could dust off the electric motorcycle, pull out the go cart and find someplace to go ride. While I normally would have said no because we had other stuff going on and work that needed to be done for school, I decided that for one day I’d say yes. After getting a little help transporting the boys to a nearby field, I unleashed them on their toys and let them go, while screams of happiness filled the air.
Not only did I earn major mom cool points but we created a heck of alot of memories. We laughed. We screamed. We went crazy. It’s a day they won’t soon forget and I know that next time they start to say that I always say no, they’ll think back to this day when I said yes and realize that it was totally worth the wait!
Saying Yes Can Make Kids More Accepting When You Do Say No
While I was able to have a totally fun day of saying yes where we took “yessies”, rode for hours and sipped on delicious Capri Sun drinks from Walmart, I was also able to teach my boys something very important: I want to say yes. I want to make memories with them. And when I do say no, it’s because it’s what is best for them! In fact, by taking a day and coming up with activities that were easy to say yes to I was able to show them that not only do I want them to have fun but more than anything I want to have fun with them!
This helped me teach them that saying no isn’t something I do to be mean. It’s something I do to make sure they have the best life possible. And along the way, they discovered that mommy really does have a lot of fun when she’s able to say yes.
Now they know that when those “NO!” moments come along, it’s because they’re important and they matter. And when the “YES!” moments come along, they are that much sweeter!
Discover a Way to Always Say Yes to their Favorite Drink
