I’ve long been a fan of sleep training with my kids. I know the importance of a great night’s sleep to not only how they feel but also how they act so it’s always been important to me to have effective night time routines in place and pay attention to both bed times and wake times. While I’ve been monitoring my children’s sleep on my own for quite some time, I recently discovered that there’s a better way….one that gives me peace of mind, makes getting the right amount of sleep fun and prevents me from having to run up and down the stairs a million times and it’s name is REMI from UrbanHello! This innovative and adorable new sleep monitor and trainer isn’t just for babies and is a perfect way to help teach older children great sleep habits while giving parents the peace of mind that knowing your child is sleep well brings. Since I’m seriously so excited (and so is my little guy) about how awesome REMI is, I wanted to share with you our experience so you too can help your child sleep better with REMI!
So before I tell you how we’re using REMI, I guess I need to share what REMI is. I had never heard of this fun friend that can be both baby monitor and sleep aid but now that I have, I’m a believer that every child needs one! REMI was designed by a French couple who are both engineers to help encourage sleep in their two children. It’s a bedside friend that comes in four colors – blue, pink, yellow and light gray – and combines five family-friendly features into one product. With REMI you can track, record and report your child’s sleep patterns, use it as a clock, use it as a baby monitor or even as a speaker and night light. While you might think that my son is a little too old for the baby monitor feature, we found that every aspect of REMI helps ensure my little guy gets the best night’s sleep in a way that he can be excited about! When we first received our REMI, my son was beyond excited at the cool design and the fun face.
He’s been begging for an alarm clock like his big brother for quite some time but I had been concerned that having a clock in his room would keep him up instead of helping him sleep. I was thrilled to discover that’s not the case at all with REMI and instead he’s actually taking a more active role in making a sleep schedule that works for him. As soon as we opened the REMI package, I could tell that we were going to have great success with our new friend!
After setting it up, downloading the REMI app on my phone and watching the video of how it works on the website, we were ready to implement all the fun ways that REMI helps make sleep better!
Schedule Sleep and Wake Times
Once my little guy gets to sleep, he rarely wakes up till morning but getting him to go to bed at night and stay in bed in the morning has been a challenge for us for quite some time. He has a bad habit of tip-toeing down the stairs super early in the morning to ask if it’s time to get up (especially on the weekends) or asking repeatedly what time bed time is again. We know we’re not alone in this struggle to help him get a great night’s sleep because according to the National Sleep Foundation study, two-thirds of children under the age of 10 have trouble sleeping. This lack of sleep (which can be caused by late bedtimes, early walking or restless nights) exposes children to the risk of problems including poor growth, lack of attention, difficulties learning and general unhappiness! Solving these morning and night sleep problems was what first made us fall in love with REMI! Using our REMI app, we were able to schedule sleep and wake times and monitor and adjust them so that our little guy gets a great night’s sleep. We chose to let him help us set up the times since he’s a little older and he was more than happy to not only enter the times he would go to sleep and wake up in the app but to also set up his REMI so that the nightlight would be on during sleep times.
Now, while scheduling these times is pretty cool, here’s where REMI gets awesome! With the sleep and wake times scheduled in the REMI app, his bedside clock was programmed to have it’s eyes open during wake times and closed during sleep times. That means that when it’s time for him to go to bed, all he has to do is look over and see REMI’s eyes closed and he knows the day is done.
There’s no more need for him to ask if it’s bedtime and it’s made that time of the day so much easier for all of us! While mom and dad telling him it’s time to go to sleep isn’t always received well, REMI’s closed eyes are a sign he can get on board with! With the added bonus of the nightlight, bedtime has become so much easier.
He no longer fights going to bed on time because it’s REMI telling him to instead of mom and dad. Even better, he has the perfect way to determine if it’s time to get up or if he needs to stay in bed in the mornings. Usually, once he’s come down the stairs to ask if it’s time to get up he’s wide awake. With REMI, he can simply glance over, see that his eyes should still be closed and go back to sleep. Then, when it is time to get up, there’s no questioning if everyone is ready to start the day and he can instead be excited about knowing that he’s getting out of bed at the right time.
These features that help him to go to sleep and wake at the right time in themselves are enough to make any parent love REMI! However, the benefits of REMI don’t stop there!
Monitor and Communicate With Your Child
While having my little guy go to bed and stay in bed is HUGE for me, I’ve found that I also use the sleep log and even the baby monitor in ways that make my life so much easier. I’ve just begun digging into the sleep log but I love that REMI allows me to track the temperature in my son’s room and see how the changes impact his sleep. I can the adjust the temperature or try to get to the bottom of what’s waking him up to ensure he sleeps better.
On top of tracking his sleep, I’ve fallen in love with the baby monitor feature of REMI. You may think that since my son is older this would be a feature I don’t use but it’s been so helpful! Where I used to treck up and down the stairs every time I heard a little noise, I can now flip on the monitor if I think I hear him and see what’s really going on. Even better, if he is awake for some reason, I can use Push to Talk feature to communicate with him and soothe him back to sleep.
I can even use REMI to tell my little guy goodnight on those rare evenings when I’m not home by bedtime. Being able to hear him and communicate with him has not only stopped my endless trips up and down the stairs but it helps him feel secure knowing that I’m never far away. That means he can get a better night’s sleep and so can I!
I even have the ability to play favorite songs or lullabies by embedding them directly into REMI via my mp3 files or simple stream music to him from my table or cellphone. All around, REMI has changed the way both my son and I look at helping him to get a good night’s sleep. For him, REMI provides some control over his own habits and the ability to be more involved in his sleeping and waking schedule. For me, REMI has taken the fight out of helping him get a good night sleep and given me all the tools I need to ensure that I’m doing all I can to help my son sleep well. Now, we both look at REMI as a friend that we couldn’t live without.
