It’s hard to believe that it’s time for the kids to head back to school but it’s true….lazy summer days are coming to an end and those busy mom mornings of the school year are here to stay. I’ll be the first to admit that school mornings in my home are chaotic. I’ve got my teenager finishing up assignments that were supposed to be done the night before and a 2nd grader searching endlessly for his favorite sweatshirt that he of course left in the car after school the previous day. Most times I feel like I’m running around trying to throw together a semblance of lunch for them to take and make sure that they at least have matching shoes on (don’t judge..it happens). Truthfully, school mornings are just stressful and often end with me running out of the house and hopping in the car in last night’s PJ’s sans breakfast just so that I can get the kids to school before the SECOND tardy bell rings. This year though, I’m working on finding ways to do things differently. While I’ll likely never be that well groomed and always calm mom that I sometimes glare at in the school drop off line, I am working on implementing a few tips to tame my busy mom morning routine.
So, how am I, who is probably one of the most disorganized, non-morning person moms ever making my school mornings simpler? Well, truthfully, I’m not all the way there yet but in three small steps I’ve made huge strides in eliminating the stress from the start of busy school days. The best part is, these easy tips are so simple to incorporate into your daily routine that you might not even notice the difference until you’re sitting at the front of the school drop off line instead of screeching into the back of it (wink, wink).
Prep Ahead for Morning Success
I know you’re tired at night…so am I. But the truth of the matter is, anything you can do the night before to ensure school morning success will make your mornings easier. If you’re drawing a blank on easy ways to use the night before to simplify your mornings, don’t worry…I’ve got some great ideas that will simplify your busy mom morning routine. Try any (or all) of the following.
- Pack lunches the night before
- Lay out clothes and shoes for each child
- Put all school books into their book bags
- Set the table for breakfast before going to bed
- Put sports bags and projects in the car
While I know these seem like such small things and it is tempting to say I’ll just do them in the morning, it’s amazing what a difference doing them the night before makes. With just a little bit on planning and 15 minutes of time in the evening, it’s easy to simplify and streamline your mornings.
Stop Hitting Snooze
I’m not a morning person and I have some pretty strong feelings towards my alarm clock but I’m doing my best to overcome those this year and stop hitting snooze. Let me tell you, I tried the whole approach of setting my alarm for earlier so that I could still hit snooze and be on time. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work. Pretty much all it does is make me grumpy. So this year, instead of setting my alarm earlier or any of my other tricks to try to extend my sleep time, I’ve simply made a commitment to stop hitting snooze. Instead, I’m setting my alarm for the exact time I need to wake up and actually getting out of bed when the alarm goes off….the first time. Not only is this helping me actually get up at the right time but it creates a productive start to my day.
Start Every Day with a Breakfast You Can Count On
While night-before preparation and actually getting out of bed when I’m supposed to make for more time in the morning, I can tell you that I can still find ways to fall down the rabbit hole and end up heading out the door hungry and grumpy. I’ve tried the whole eating after I take the kids to school thing and really, it doesn’t work for me. Once they are dropped off, there are a million things that come up and tons of errands to run so, for me, if I don’t eat first thing, I generally end up not eating breakfast which is not my ideal way to start the day. I know from my own experiences that starting my day with a good breakfast is one of the easiest ways to stay on track with not only my weight management but also my productivity. In fact, studies show that breakfast eaters may enjoy a number of advantages like improved nutrition and overall diet, improved concentration during the morning and a positive impact on managing body weight. Even knowing all these things, I still often get so busy that I don’t make time for the most important meal of the day….until now.
