Thank you UBTECH for sponsoring this post. JIMU Robots are a fun way to bring robotics into kid’s day to day and make the perfect gift you can feel good about gifting to the children in your lives this holiday season!
My littlest is super curious. He wants to know how things work and what makes them function in the way that they do. Because of this curiosity, he’s been asking about coding for some time now. He got a brief introduction to basic coding in his computer class at school and he’s always talking about how he wants to learn more and bring creations to life. That’s why we recently gave him his very own JIMU Robot. The interactive and fun kit from JIMU allows him to build his own robot from the pieces provided, bring it to life through pairing it with the free app and then code in an easy yet fabulous way to teach his new robot to perform a series of tasks and commands. I knew this was a gift he would love but even I was surprised by how easy it was to make learning fun with JIMU Robots.
As a mom, I want my child to know how to code. I want him to be comfortable with using technology and the basic principals of STEM learning at an early age. However, I know that he’s a hands on learner and at times, I need to find ways for him to learn that feel like play. He loves to create but he often gets frustrated when the creating part is over and wonders what’s next. That’s what appealed to me as a mom about JIMU Robots. These fun, exciting robots that are created for kids ages 8+ combine the worlds of building, coding and playing to create an experience that teaches while entertaining. JIMU Robots come in a variety of different series so that they appeal to all types of interests and include the option to build different designs from each kit. While I like surprises, I wanted my little guy to be involved in choosing his own robot so I presented him with all three options….the UnicornBot Kit, the Overdrive Kit and the Cosmos Kit. While each of these kits would have been amazing for him, I wasn’t surprised at all when he picked the Astrobot Cosmos Kit. I mean, after all, it did look like tons of fun!
While he was excited for his JIMU Robot kit to arrive, once it did and he truly grasped what he could do with this amazing learning toy, he couldn’t wait to get started. He immediately wanted to open the box and begin to build.
After grabbing his daddy (these kits are a great family project!), we quickly downloaded the free JIMU app onto my phone and he began to work his way through the online instructions. First he was prompted to choose which creation he wanted to build from three possible choices. While he wanted to go with one of the pre-designed options, there was also the choice to build his own robot creation simply by using his imagination (which he totally plans to do now that he’s built one of the included designs).
Using the instructions on the free app, he and his daddy simply followed along step by step as they were able to build the JIMU Astrobot.
While he likely could have built the entire robot in one afternoon, we divided it up into multiple days so that he was able to really focus and learn as he put his JIMU Robot together. This also helped to build the excitement about what his creation would be like when it was complete.
Once he had built his Astrobot by following the easy online instructions in the free app, he discovered that building his robot is just the start of the learning fun with it comes to JIMU. By using the app, he was able to control his new creation and make it move, answer his questions and more.
While I thought the ability to control his Astrobot using the app was amazing, he couldn’t wait to take things to the next level by using the app to code commands and set up sequences for his robot to perform. By simply going to the coding section of the app, he was able to write his own code using the prompts to string together sequences of movements and challenge his Astrobot to perform certain commands.
He was able to create entire sequences of tasks for his Astrobot to do and once he had coded in the tasks, he simply pushed the play button and his JIMU Robot would come to life and do exactly what he had programmed it to do.
Truthfully, it was amazing for me to watch him set up these lines of code and then push a button and see his JIMU Robot execute exactly what he had set up on the app. I watched as the gears in his head began to turn and he started becoming more independent about creating his own code and coming up with strings of tasks for his JIMU Robot to perform.
While building the JIMU Robot had been fun for him and using the simple controls to play with it had kept him grinning, seeing how happy he was to be able to challenge himself and create simple code to control his robot convinced this mama that JIMU Robots are a learning gift that keeps on giving.
Every day since receiving his JIMU Robot, he asks if he can write new code and create new sequences for his Astrobot to perform. And of course I say yes because it’s so amazing for me to see him this excited about learning to code. He will literally sit for hours coming up with new lines of code and seeing what happens when he strings certain commands together in a certain way. He’s even tried to code his JIMU Robot to chase the dog which is a unique brand of entertainment in itself.
If you have a curious kiddo who loves to build, loves to learn and loves to play, make learning fun for them this holiday season by getting them their own JIMU Robot from Target! They are the perfect gift for this holiday season and are a great way to make learning and coding the most fun skill your child will learn this year. Be sure to add one of the fun and versatile JIMU Robots to your child’s Christmas list today!
Then tell me, which of the JIMU Robots would your child love to find under the Christmas tree?
