It’s no secret that I love to read. Give me a good book and a warm cup of coffee and I’m happy for hours. While I’m never without a book close at hand, I am always on the lookout for new books to add to my reading list that captivate me and draw me in. I guess you could say that for me a perfect book is one that you pick up and just can’t put down till that last page is turned. Sleep doesn’t matter. Food doesn’t matter. All that matters is finding out what happens to these characters that for a moment come to life on the pages of the book. Truthfully, while I’ve never met a book I didn’t like, when I find one that I totally fall in love with I can’t help but share with all the other book lovers like me out there and that’s why I want to share with you five reasons you should read The Girl He Used To Know by Tracey Garvis Graves as well as an easy recipe for a simple spiced latte that pairs perfectly with this unexpected jewel of a book.
Now, I’m not going to give away anything about this amazing book (besides the fact that it’s an absolute must read) but I do want to share with you the reasons why The Girl He Used To Know became an instant favorite for me (remember, you can order this book starting April 2nd).
It’s Filled with Quirky but Relatable Characters
From the moment you meet Annika and Jonathan on page one of The Girl He Used To Know, you will be captivated by them. These characters are so well thought out and so relatable and truthfully, just so lovable. Trust me when I say you’ll be rooting for the ending that you will instantly know that they deserve.
It’s the Perfect Blend of Past and Present
As you can tell from the title of the book, there is a back story that ties in perfectly and weaves itself together with the current lives of the main characters in these books. So often I find myself wondering what makes my favorite characters the way they are and Tracey Garvis Graves answers that question in the most delightful way by giving us pieces of their past and their present.
It Will Take You Back to Falling In Love
There are few things I love more than a good love story and while more unconventional than some love stories, The Girl He Used To Know will remind you of falling in love. It will remind you of not only those “firsts” but how sometimes they are the precursor for an even greater story.
It Take Unexpected Twists and Turns
Every time I thought I had this book figured out, it would throw me a curve ball. I would think all was well and then complications would arise. The last few chapters literally left me breathless as I went back and forth between the possible endings. Seriously, I’ve read so many books that I can usually guess exactly what is going to happen but The Girl He Used To Know kept me on my toes.
It’s Got an Ending That You Won’t See Coming
The ending of this book rocked me. I was literally telling the kids to leave me alone and hiding in the closet to read because I just had to know what happened. There may have been tears. There was definitely nail biting. But in the end, this book delivered in a way that even I didn’t expect. Trust me when I say you must check it out but be sure you have time to read because when you pick it up you won’t want to put it back down!

Reading with a cup of coffee in hand is kind of my thing. Whether it’s regular or decaf (depending on the time of the day), I like to match my lattes to the mood of the books I’m reading. Since The Girl He Used To Know is unexpected and boasts characters that are slightly different and ends up being a totally satisfying read, I decided to whip up a slightly unexpected Spiced Latte to pair with my book.
- 2 Cups of Strongly Brewed Coffee
- 2 Teaspoons of Molasses
- 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
- 1 Teaspoon of Cloves
- 1 Teaspoon Ginger
- 1 Teaspoon of Nutmeg
- 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
- 2 Teaspoons of Sugar
- 1 and ½ Cup of Milk
- Cloves for Garnish (if desired)
- Add the molasses, spices, vanilla, sugar and milk to a small pan and whisk together.
- Heat over medium heat until it begins to steam.
- Immediately transfer the mixture into the blender and blend for 2 minutes.
- Brew the coffee.
- Transfer the coffee to two cups.
- Pour in the blended mixture using a spoon to keep the froth in the mixer.
- Spoon of froth onto the top of the mixture.
- Garnish with cloves and enjoy.
To make this easy spiced latte, I simply added my molasses, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla extract, sugar and milk to a small pan.
After whisking all of my ingredients together, I warmed the milk mixture over medium heat until it started to steam.
Once my mixture was steaming, I transferred it to a blender and blended it for two minutes (this is an easy trick to get frothly lattes if you don’t have a frother). As soon as my mixture was well blended, I brewed my coffee and poured in into my mug. Then I simply poured my milk mixture over it till it filled the cup, using a spoon the keep my froth from pouring in.
With my spiced latte ready, I used a spoon to add the froth from my blended milk to the top of my drink.
Then I simply garnished with cloves and my spiced latte was ready to enjoy.
With my spiced latte that’s just as unique and satisfying as The Girl He Used To Know in hand, I sat down to read this fabulous book. I’ll be honest, I shirked responsibilities and read The Girl He Used To Know by Tracey Garvis Graves in two days.
I could not put it down and I was more than pleased with the journey it took me on. Like I mentioned before, I’ve read my fair share of books and in my mind, The Girl He Used To Know is a must read that any book lover is sure to adore.
