My boys have always loved learning about ooey, gooey grossness that takes place in their bodies. For as long as I can remember, they’ve asked questions about how scabs form, what happens to food when it digests, and what grows in various crevices of their bodies. In fact, my youngest has gotten so interested in these subjects that he has become a proud member of his school’s science club. As much as he loves his club and time spent studying science at school, when he comes home I want this love of learning to continue in a way that is engaging, interactive, and above all fun. Whether your kiddos are like mine and already love science or you’re looking for a way to help them fall in love with learning, read on to learn my easy ways to make science fun for kids.
Since my son already loves science, it’s not too hard for me to get him excited about learning. However, when I’m able to combine his love of science with a hands-on experience that focuses on some of the grosser aspects of the human body, I’ve got the recipe for learning success. With the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit , I’m able to do just that. By using just a little creativity on my part and pairing it with what is already any parents’ favorite way to give their child a fun, hands-on, and educational experience, I’ve discovered the perfect way to make learning at home one activity that my curious kid can’t get enough of. Here’s how I did it (because let me tell you, you’re gonna want to pick up your own Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit here or from Walmart today and recreate this afternoon filled with laughter, a few gags, and tons of learning).
Get Geared Up for the Experiment
The Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit is packed full of fun experiment ideas like learning about what happens to food as it’s digested, creating blood, and finding out what makes it clot, growing friendly molds and bacteria and making snot, but before we opened our kit and got down to business, my little guy insisted that he have the right attire. Since I don’t have a lab coat and glasses lying around at my house, I quickly grabbed a paper bag, a few markers and some pool goggles and whipped up a mad scientist costume with his help. Not only did this set the stage for keeping his clothes clean during out experiments but it was a great time for us to talk about all the fun things that we were getting ready to learn about.
Once he was fully dressed for an afternoon of learning fun, we were ready to open his Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit and get down to learning more about some of the most disgusting but interesting functions of the human body.
Invite a Friend to Learn With You
While my son is happy learning independently, we’re big believers that learning is more fun with a friend. Not only does this encourage conversations and curiosity but let’s just face it, when you’re talking about disgusting biology, it’s better to have someone close by who finds it all just as amusingly gross as your child does!
Make Learning Hands On with the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit
I’ve always been a fan of learning through experimentation. We’ve made slime and created eggs that bounce. We’re not afraid of getting a little dirty in the name of figuring out how things work. However, I’ve never found a kit that’s as perfect for teaching about what goes on in the human body on an age-appropriate level as the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit. This kit is part of a line of Scientific Explorer® Kits that make learning fun while helping curious kiddos like my own to develop critical thinking skills, be imaginative and explore through interactive experiments and activities. By using the items included in the kit (like agar, agar, yeast, petri dishes, and more) and a few items that were readily available in my kitchen, we were able to conduct quite a few experiments that were just perfectly disgusting for little boys.
So, what did we create? Well, I’m so glad you asked. It’s important to keep in mind that the experiments in the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit are the grossest, most revolting experiments available that help educate kids ages 8 and older (with adult supervision) on subjects like what grows on their body, what’s in their teeth and of course my son’s favorite, what’s behind our unmentionable, smelly bodily functions (yup, 8 year old boys’ heads are exploding everywhere right now). From the minute the box of the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit is opened, you’ll hear oohs and ahhs and icks from all directions. Want to know what I mean? Have your kids ever asked why blood congeals and clots? You can learn the answer in a fun and age-appropriate way by making fake blood using water, the ingredients in the kit and a clear glass. Even better, you can take things a step further and use that fake blood to learn how scabs form!
Or perhaps your child has questioned what happens to their food once they eat it. They can learn about the entire digestive process through the stinky intestine experiments. This was a favorite for my little guy and made the idea of stomach acid and how food is digested and expelled from the body so easy for him to understand.
Along with his friends, he was even able to use yeast to create (ahem) flatulent yeast to learn more about his bodily functions.
Truthfully, the simple booklet included in the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit walked us through a number of easy experiments that he was able to do with my help and at the end of the day, he had learned about everything from digestion to blood to snot to bacteria. He’s even growing his own bacteria from samples taken from between his toes and in his nose (ugh but kinda cool, right?). It’s seriously such an amazing way to bring learning to life and make science so much fun.
Our Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit not only provided a day of learning but it continues to teach us daily as we watch our bacteria grow and talk more about the experiments we performed. For all you mamas of curious kids (or even future mad scientists), I highly encourage you to purchase the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit. With tons of easy experiments that will take science to a whole new level, it’s a fun and fabulous way to make learning about the human body an activity that your curious kids can’t get enough of.
So don’t wait! Click here or head to your local Walmart to purchase the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit!
Then tell me, which of the disgustingly fun experiments in the Scientific Explorer® Disgusting Biology Kit would your kids be most excited to try?
This does look like so much fun! I know my kids would have a blast with this. They always love experiments.

I have to look into getting this for my nieces and nephews. This looks like a lot of fun.
This kit looks like so much fun for kids. I love how the kit embraces the grossness of some of human biology. It’s definitely a great way to get kids interested.
im def pinng this for later- my kids love science but a little young right now so i cant wait to try some of these when they get older
These kits look like a lot of fun! And learning about science is one of my favorite things to do, even as an adult!

I love it when toys are so fun, kids don’t realize they are learning at the same time. My girls would have loved this when they were little. Especially my oldest, as she’s majoring in biochemistry right now. It would have been right up her alley!
Science is so fun anyway and then put these ideas with it and you have a great time! What great tips.
This looks like a lot of fun! My kids would have loved something like this when they were younger.
Looks like a ton of fun! Learning and having fun at the same time is precious. I love science too!
Kids would have fun with that, for sure. Science was my son’s favorite subject when he was in elementary. He enjoyed all things science.
I was the same way as a kid – and my sister too! We were always curious about the science behind the human body. And it shows with my sister, she became a biochemist!
How fun! Science is so important these days. I’m pinning this to recreate with my grandkids. They are going to think I am so cool!

That does look like a lot of fun. My daughters love doing Science stuff like this. They always get very excited. I’ll have to check this out for them.
Wow! This looks like so much fun while learning science! I am sure my son will definitely love this activity. Thank you for sharing!
