Turn Your Boring Bedroom into a Sanctuary in 4 Easy Steps!

Living with three guys, I need a place to escape. The kids have their decked out rooms, the hubby has his man cave but in the past I haven’t had anywhere that felt like mine. When the hubs and I got married, we decided to keep all of his (gorgeous) Ethan Allen furniture. But since he already had a bedspread that fit it, I really didn’t do much. Fast forward to eight years later and it was time for a change.

Thankfully I have a mom who has amazing style and a few months ago we set out to transform my boring bedroom into a complete sanctuary! Here’s a few tips to help you do the same.

Pick Furniture that You Love: Yes, my hubby already had our furniture and thankfully it was something that I really do love! With a sleigh bed and beautiful dressers, it suited my taste perfectly. But I needed to find nightstands and accent tables to match. It’s important to choose a look and stick with it - even if it’s not all from the same brand, make sure that the items match up well for an organized look.

Choose A Color Scheme that is Calming: This sounds like common sense but in reality it’s a little more difficult. Research has shown that blues, greens and purples are among the most calming colors. With this in mind, we looked for pieces that pulled those colors into the room. Since I have dark furniture, we decided to mix in a little brown for a look that instantly made my bedroom somewhere I wanted to be.

Find the Perfect Accessories: Finding the perfect furniture and bedspread is important but it’s only step one! Be sure to look for curtains, mirrors and pictures that pair perfectly with the look you are trying to achieve. To complete my calming look, I went with draperies that were flowy and green and accented the rest of the room perfectly. I also found lamps that were elegant to ensure that I didn’t end up with a room that looked overdone.

Take Time Each Day to Pull It All Together: If you want your room to be a sanctuary, treat it as one. Keep your bed made. Remember to light that lamp that gives it a relaxing feel. Open the windows. While it’s important to create the look you want, maintaining it is just as essential!
