Bahahahahaha….that’s my evil mad scientist laugh as Halloween approaches and things around my home start to get a little spooky! You see, Halloween is one of our FAVORITE holidays! After all, when else do you get to put on a crazy cool costume, eat lots of Hershey’s chocolate and go door to door collecting candy to enjoy for weeks to come?
In preparation of the rapidly approaching holiday (I mean, it’s October TOMORROW ya’ll!) I’ve been getting a little crafty. Because you see, we recently moved. With this being our first Halloween in our new home, we need to make an impression. In addition to the crazy, spooky trees that fill our backyard, I figured we needed to come up with something extra this year to make our presence known and fill our new neighborhood with the Halloween spirit. And since, well, you only have one time to make a first impression I decided to create some custom candy pails to hold the sweets for all our trick-or-treaters and surprise all the ghosts and ghouls that will be making their way to our front door!
Step one to making our Halloween perfect was of course stocking up on the right candy. And let’s just face it, in our home nothing but Hershey’s will do! So imagine my relief when I saw the Large Variety Hersey Candy Bags at Walmart! Located conveniently right inside the main door and across from the costumes, there were bags that were full of mini versions of our Halloween favorites like Kit-Kat, Reece’s, Almond Joy, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars and more! And since they were mega-sized with tons of sweetness, I didn’t have to worry that I’d run out of candy and ruin Halloween!
Armed with enough candy for the upcoming onslaught of cute, crazily and scarily dressed kiddos, I took my candy home to move on to the next step of my not so evil plan.
Knowing that I wanted to do more than just have candy on hand, I decided I’d set up a little display on my porch for when the trick-or-treaters began to arrive. I wanted it to be simple and honestly, not so scary. After all, there are lots of littles in my neighborhood and I didn’t want them running away full of fear! As I racked my brain (and searched my craft cabinet) I came up with a fun idea. For years now we’ve been turning old buckets into fun trick-or-treating pails. Knowing that this idea would be the perfect way to display and hold my newly acquired candy, I set to work creating semi-spooky bat and spider trick-or-treat pails.
To start my transformation, I rounded up two buckets that were similar in size.
I tend to have a lot of these on hand for storage and I knew they were the perfect base for a fun Halloween display! Once I had my buckets in hand, I quickly sprayed them with black spray paint.
It took a few coats of spray paint to get them completely black (and I highly recommend using a spray paint that has a primer in it) but once they were painted I left them to dry.
A few hours later, I was ready to take on phase two of my trick-or-treat bucket transformation. With googly eyes, black sparkly felt and pipe cleaners on hand, my black buckets were about to be transformed into something crazy cool! I plugged up my hot glue gun and then got to work! To start with, I created my simple bat bucket.
I started by cutting bat wings out of some old cardboard boxes that I had laying around. This was as easy as drawing on bat wings and (carefully) cutting them out.
After painting my cardboard wings black, I covered them with sparkly black felt, using my glue gun to secure the felt and leaving a small area on the end to attach to my bucket.
While my “wings” were drying, I used my hot blue gun to attach large googly eyes to my larger black bucket.
Then I simply used hot glue to attach the ends of the bat wings to each side of my bucket.
And ta-da! I had a completed bat bucket that I knew any kid would love.
With my first bucket complete, it was time to move on to my spider bucket.
Again, I wanted to make my version a friendly spider as to not scare of any kiddos. So I glued on googly eyes and then used black pipe cleaners as legs.
After attaching and bending eight legs until they looked perfect, my second bucket was complete. With both of my candy buckets ready to be filled, there was only one thing left to do!
I quickly filled both buckets up with delicious, mini Hershey’s candy! With the Large Size Variety bags from Walmart, it was easy to make sure I have plenty of candy on hand to fill my buckets time and time again!
Knowing that most of the kiddos would make their way to our front porch, I borrowed the table from our outdoor lounge set and turned it sideways. Then I placed both buckets of candy on the table.
After adding a few curly pipe cleaners into the buckets of candy, I set back to survey my work.
Now I may be partial but what met my eyes looked like the best candy display possible to me. It was semi-spooky and way sweet! And I knew that from preschoolers to pre-teens, everyone who came to my house to trick or treat would be over the top excited about the creative way we had displayed our candy!
Now, I’m sure I’ll be whipping up a few more of these buckets for the kids to carry because, honestly, they are just too cute! And the ones I’ve already made to store our Hershey’s candy are sure to have a prominent place on Halloween night.
So if you’re ready to make your Halloween celebrations super special and a lot sweet, try your hand at these fun ideas and create your own candy display! Because no matter what not-so-spooky creature you decide to create, they are sure to be the perfect way to store, collect and save all your yummy Hershey’s candy on this very special holiday!
Now that I’ve shown you how I’ll be presenting our Hershey’s candy to trick-or-treaters, I’d love to hear your ideas for dishing out delicious delights to all your ghosts and ghouls!

I think I am going to make one of these. I love how cute it came out.
That is so cute! I love all the gory Halloween stuff, but I also love seeing these fun and silly ideas, too.

That is so adorable! I’ll have to make this for the kids this year.
They look great! I love using those buckets for things like Halloween, but I never thought about spray painting them. I need to dig out some spare ones and get to work!
Is it sad that I’m ready for Halloween because I eat my son’s candy? Haha! He’s not much of a candy eater (strange, I know) and neither is my boyfriend, sooooo…I get all the candy! I really love the idea of your candy bucket. This would actually be perfect for me since we live in an apartment. I could easily sit this outside our door and let those roaming the halls take what they want.
I love these buckets that you made up. And I think having the kids carry them with them door to door makes good sense. They will be cute, but they will also carry a lot of candy. When I was a kid I carried a small plastic orange pumpkin door to door, and there really was not a lot of room for much candy. Mind you candy bars were much bigger way back then too. 🙂
Have a wonderful October!

These are too cute! And super easy to make! I think these would be perfect for “boo-ing” someone (you know, where you leave treats for neighbors and friends with a note that they’ve been boo-ed?). I bet that would make you very popular in your new neighborhood pretty quick!
Ah! I love this. That isn’t so spooky but it sure is adorable and is perfect for Halloween! My kids would love it!
What a cute idea. I still don’t know if I will be home or not to give out Halloween goodies this year but if I am I want to do something fun this year. I hate spooky but I love all of the cute things you can do to make the holiday fun for little ones.
I might have to ask grandma and grandpa to watch the dogs that night. They HATE Halloween with everyone in the street in front of the house and ringing the doorbell. Its ok if it is the mailman and he is bringing us treats but not to give them out.

Love these two styles of buckets for candy. Very easy looking to do so the kids can kind of do it on their own.
