While winter seemed to drag on for quite a while, warm days have finally arrived. In my area, temperatures are already reaching the 90’s which has me thinking more than a little bit about how to keep our home cool this summer. Living in a part of the country that has a tendency to get very hot (with record highs expected this summer) while still keeping costs down can be somewhat of a challenge. However, with a few simple home cooling tips and some help from Sears Home Improvement, it’s easier than ever to ensure that staying cool this summer is simple!
So, how can keeping your home cool be easy? In truth, it only takes a little thought and a little preparation to ensure that the summer months don’t leave you sweating. Want to know more? Here’s a few easy tips.
Don’t Leave Doors and Windows Open
I have kids so I’m all too familiar with doors being left open as they run outside. If I had a penny for every time I closed a door behind them, let’s just say that I could probably get a whole new cooling system installed! Taking a few extra seconds to make sure doors and windows are securely closed can make a HUGE difference! It’s such a little change but in the end, it can help keep your home much cooler!
Use Blinds, Shades and/or Curtains
I love looking out of my windows….however, when the sun is shining directly into them, it heats up my home QUICKLY! Now, this doesn’t mean that windows need to be shuttered and drawn all the time. In fact, I can’t live without my natural light. However, in the peak times of the day when the sun comes directly into my widows, I do make sure that shades are drawn, blinds are closed and curtains are pulled. It’s an easy way to keep my house from heating up quickly so that it’s not so hard to cool down.
Make Sure Your HVAC System is in Top Condition
While making small changes like the ones I’ve mentioned above are a great starting place for ensuring you’re ready to keep your home cool during the summer months, the most important step you can take is ensuring that your HVAC system is in top shape. Yes, changing your filters does help. But more importantly, maintaining and replacing your system when needed makes a huge difference. That’s where Sears Home Services comes in! Their mobile service fleet is the largest in the nation with over 10,000 certified technicians trained in the latest technology on major brands of appliances, electronics, lawn and garden, fitness equipment and of course HVAC (see where I’m going here?). I can tell you personally that last year (our first year in our new house) our HVAC system went out in…wait for it…JULY! It was HOT ya’ll and we ended up needing some major repairs. Through that experience I learned my lesson and that lesson is that preventative measures are the best! This year, as I prepared for summer, one of my first calls was to Sears Home Services to ensure that my HVAC system was in top shape. Though this experience, I learned that maintenance and preventative measures can help my HVAC system work better for longer and ensure that 100+ degree days don’t end up heating up my whole house. Even better, I know I can trust Sears Home Services to not only let me know when it’s time to replace my HVAC system but also give me a great deal on a new one that will last for years!

Now tell me, besides ensuring your HVAC system is working it’s best, what are you tips for keeping your home cool during the summer months?

We have an old house, so that means we have to use window units here. My husband spent last weekend cleaning the filters and getting them ready!
We have our HVAC serviced every year. I’d rather put out a little bit of money to keep everything running than a ton of money to fix a major problem.
My husband was always telling the kids close the door we aren’t cooling the outside. Oh fond memories. These are all great ideas. Always have the system checked before using.
I will keep all this in mind! We keep our thermostat up, to 77, because I don’t want a high bill. This means we have to work hard not to get too warm inside.

We don’t have air conditioning so we have a pool instead. We currently have windows open, fans going, and pool ready for swimming!
We keep our curtains drawn on particularly hot days. It’s amazing how much it helps!
It gets really hot here, so it’s important to make sure your HVAC system is in top shape. We also use blinds and fans.
It’s so important to keep the home in top shape during the summer. These are wonderful tips on keeping the home energy-efficient.
I live in a hot part of the country. It’s very important to have your HVAC serviced regularly. Cooling out in July? Yuck. Great information and tips. Thanks.
These are all great tips. I know it can be hard to stay cool during summer. I’ll make sure to keep all your tips in mind.
We are in Florida so it is SO important to keep our cooling costs down over the summer. We have already hit record temps!!
When it is hot I always keep my windows and blinds closed during the day and open them windows at night. Using a window fan to draw in the cool air at night is a great way to cool off a room as well.
These are great tips to stay cool. I wil have to try a few this weekend. We are expecting some hot weather.

I am not looking forward to the heat this summer. We do not have air conditioning in our new house yet. Keeping the blinds closed really helps.
We are so lucky to have a pool. It is a great way to beat the summer heat.

It’s getting warmer in our place as well. I sure could use your cooling tips.
Great tips! I get so hot during the summer and I’m always yelling at the kids to keep the doors and windows shut.
Summer is definitely here. Great information for all. We need an hvac pm soon
I could not live without central air! It is just too humid around here and the allergens give me a headache! These definitely are helpful tips!

We also had our AC unit go out during the middle of the summer last year and I know how that feels. We had a leak and they were able to charge our unit unfortunately we had to have it charged again this year. We need a new unit but the budget is not allowing it so we are hoping to get one more summer out of this one.
We usually try and cool down our house at night after the temperature drops at night and then shut everything down when we go to bed. It helps it stay cool all day!
I never thought of all these things that you have to take care of at the house because you are homeschooling. It’s so important to keep a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for your kids!
These are great tips! We always make sure that our HVAC good condition is maintained. Will suggest the SEARS maintenance with my friends too. 😀
I agree with having the HVAC checked and serviced if necessary. It will not only improve its efficiency, it will also avoid major repairs (or unit replacement) if we don’t give it a check. Thanks for the reminder!
I really love you tips for keeping the house cooler in summer. I rent so I can’t change my AC but I’m sure glad it works well.

We have ours checked every year too. This is something I have to remember to get scheduled . Pretty soon summer is here and I don’t want to be without a working HVAC!
It’s that time of year again where we complain about the heat and need to cool down. Great tips on this post 🙂 Now bring on the ice cream 🙂

You never want your air conditioning to go out in the middle of a heat wave when you’ll never be able to get a repairman out to fix it in a timely manner. Smart to get it checked out every once in awhile during the off season.
My kids always forget to shut the door and I can just envision the A/C just flowing right outside! We live in Florida and it is hot a lot of the time, so we have to make sure we keep the house cool!
Upon checking the HVAC through internet. I was amazed with the product. I was planning to buy that also.
